Since the beginning of civilization how to organize recorded knowledge in libraries and personal book collections has been a matter of practical and intellectual concern. Many of the systems devised are idiosyncratic, or reflect world views which seem strange to the modern mind. Today there is still a proliferation of classifications, and their applications include not only books, but also ephemera, physical objects, e-resources, datasets, and the semantic web. However, there is more understanding of how we should go about designing systems on a proper scientific basis, and a body of theoretical work that gives academic credibility to the process.

Vanda Broughton has been a researcher, professional practitioner, and academic in the field of knowledge organization. She is currently Editor of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification, and Associate Editor of the Universal Decimal Classification, two large systems for the classification and indexing of information. Her research is primarily in the development of faceted classification theory, and its application to the design and construction of controlled vocabularies in all subject fields.

Friday lunchtime lecture - Oceans of data, with Adam Leadbetter

Recording of my talk at the American Philosophical Association Central Division meeting. 

The central aim of the talk is to articulate ways in which the age of the semantic web (or Web 3.0) puts us in a collectively worse epistemic position, and how this could undermine our democracy. I will argue that this supports an internet landscape that adheres to the principles of what has come to be known as net neutrality. 


Web 3.0 And The New Epistemic Threat To Democracy

Human-level (“general”) AI is more difficult to achieve than most people think. One key obstacle is relevance, a conceptual version of the frame problem. Another is lack of the semantic web. Yet another is the difficulty of computer vision. So artificial general intelligence (AGI) isn’t on the horizon. Possibly, it may never be achieved. No AGI means no Singularity.

Even so, there’s already plenty to worry about—and future AI advances will add more. Areas of concern include unemployment, computer companions, and autonomous robots (some, military). Worries about the (illusory) Singularity have had the good effect of waking up the AI community (and others) to these dangers. At last, they are being taken seriously.

Professor Margaret Boden is a world-leading academic in the study of intelligence, both artificial and otherwise. She is is Research Professor of Cognitive Science at the Department of informatics at the University of Sussex, where her work embraces the fields of artificial intelligence, psychology, philosophy, cognitive and computer science. She was the founding-Dean of Sussex University’s School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences, a pioneering centre for research into intelligence and the mechanisms underlying it — in humans, other animals, or machines. The School’s teaching and research involves an unusual combination of the humanities, science, and technology.

Professor Boden has also been an important participant in the recent international discussions over the long-term impacts of AI. She was a member of the AAAI’s 08/09 Presidential Panel on long-term AI futures (http://www.aaai.org/Organization/presidential-panel.php), and also took part in the recent Puerto Rico conference on the Future of AI, co-organised by CSER (http://futureoflife.org/misc/ai_conference); she is therefore uniquely well-placed to discuss near- and long-term prospects in AI.

Melissa Fach: Explain machine learning and why this is important for business owners.

Eric Van Buskirk weighs in first by explaining that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the business repercussions of Artificial Intelligence. As Google crawls the web and creates databases of information, they analyze that data.  From that analysis they are able to detect patterns and discern meaning and connections to other content. The programs written as search algorithms are now using the pattern recognition to sort data and results for users without direct input of human programmers.

Jeff jumps in to expand on Google’s use of data. He hints that using labels (we can assume here Schema markup) helps the machines to sort and rank your pages appropriately. Along with this, the machine learning systems are also using pattern recognition and user behavior to determine the quality and usefulness of site content. The importance is shifting from gaming a particular algorithm to creating pages and content with high user satisfaction. For business owners, the importance is now focused on the user experience. Did you provide the depth of information that the site visitor was looking for? Did you focus on just using search terms on the page, or did you create an experience that helps a potential customer make an informed decision about your product? Google’s machine learning system is going to be able to determine what is high quality, thorough information verses thin content created to bait traffic without any real goal beyond the visit.
