Our Day’ is an anthem of hope and empowerment for young people to keep fighting through adversity. I wrote this song to give a voice to those who feel invisible, powerless and insignificant in this world.

This song was inspired by my fans who shared their stories with me after I posted “are you happy?” on Instagram and asked them to email me if they needed to vent.  Within hours I had received hundreds of emails from young people all over the world.

Their stories were equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring, full of pain and confusion, strength and resilience. They shared their fears and their dreams, struggles of their past and hopes for their future.

‘Our Day’ is dedicated to those who were brave enough to share their stories with me.  The lyrics are their words, their feelings, their stories.

The chorus sums up a simple, albeit powerful message in response to my fans: “We gon’ have our day / we gonna have it.” 

I hope this message reaches my fans of underrepresented communities who are ostracized  and marginalized in the world we live in, and feel like they'll never see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I can personally relate to their struggles as a young black kid growing up in North Philly, whose dreams seemed too big and unrealistic for my circumstances.  

Now, as a strong black lead on one of Netflix’ most watched shows, ‘On My Block’, I’m experiencing new challenges but the same feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness as a young black talent trying to make it in an industry with limited opportunities available for actors of color.  

No matter where you come from, what color you are, or what you’re dealing with… we all experience moments of weakness and feelings of hopelessness at different phases in our life, but I hope this song will motivate people to fight through it, cause we gon’ have our day, all of us.
