Bio: Rev. Crystal Zerfoss serves the Inland Northwest Unitarian Universalist Community in Spokane, WA.  She currently resides in Bremerton, WA with her feline companion, Ella.  When she’s not in the pulpit or donning one of her many ministerial hats, she can be found kayaking on a local lake or putting together a large jigsaw puzzle as part of her spiritual practice.

Giving other species a vote is an infinite extension of Democracy. The holism achieved by such a move excludes nothing. It would involve realism – the truth of the way things actually are.   Choosing to see other species as role-models for how to be a species would change everything. It opens the door for dealing with global problems while simultaneously covering all bases locally.

Kindness is one of those words that can seem “fluffy”; a nice idea, but maybe a little naively optimistic or insufficient, especially when we sense conflict, confrontation, or opposition to our own goals or ideas. Sometimes we’ve got to be tough, unapologetic, and resolute, right? But I wonder how we might be transformed if we tried to be as kind as possible in everything we do? How might we show up differently if kindness was one of our highest values?

Buddhism is a complex and multifaceted religion. In the limited time we have for today’s service, we will not attempt to teach Buddhism to you, nor will we go into sufficient depth to provide you with any true appreciation for its nuances and beauty. Instead, we have tried to identify some basic Buddhist concepts that suggest ways for us to maintain our cool during this summer of intense heat and polarized political and social disagreement.

Jeff has been attending WUUC since 2019, serving as a Board of Trustee since 2022, currently as the President. He participated in various church activities including Soul Matters, Crossing Path, Circle Super, Men’s retreat, and managed sound and camera supporting our service. Jeff has been an UU since 1999 in North Andover, Massachusetts, where he was involved in technology team and facilitated Build Your Own Theology. 
Jeff was born in Taiwan before immigrating to the US in 1974.  From 2008 to 2021, Jeff lived in China and Taiwan, working as an executive leading computer hardware design and manufacturing. His extensive travel experience in Asia brings a great perspective on Buddhism in everyday lives in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. 

Steve is a retired university administrator and research psychologist. He and his wife, Susan McBain, live in the Fairwinds-Brittany Park senior community in Woodinville. During the waning years of the Vietnam War, he lived in Bangkok, Thailand, while working with a Thai government agency under a contract with the U. S. Department of Defense. This work allowed him to travel throughout Thailand and learn about Thai life and customs, including Buddhism. He later traveled throughout Asia, visiting Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Bhutan, as well as India and Nepal.

Deanna Vandiver (she/they), lives with her partner on the land of the Coastal Salish people known as the Suquamish, “the people of the clear salt water" and is an auntie to many beloveds across an ever-increasing span of generations. Deeply grateful to the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (pisab.org) for shaping their core understandings of how systemic racism dehumanizes all of us, Deanna finds sustaining joy by the water and magical possibilities in every glue stick, garden, and collaboration. Deanna serves as Director of the UU College of Social Justice and Director of Justice Education for the UUSC.

Autism Pride Day was started on June 18, 2005 by Aspies for Freedom as a way to celebrate the Autistic mind instead of trying to cure it. Many autistic minds have contributed great innovations in almost all areas of study and society but have often had to cover their Autism traits in order to fit into a world that often does not understand them. Mike Ervick bio: Mike will be speaking about disaster response as it currently exists in the U.S. today, and the future of disaster response in a post-FEMA world. To say Mike is an expert in this area feels like an understatement. You probably don't see Mike on many Sundays because he spends the vast majority of his year deployed to various disasters around the country. Fires in L.A.? Mike was there. Hurricane flooding in the Carolinas? Mike was there. Body recovery in Texas? Yes, he was there, too. The work he does takes true dedication.

One of the well-deserved critiques of offering a land acknowledgement is the danger of words without relationship building and action to give the words meaning. The East Shore Unitarian Church Indigenous Connections Team has developed and strengthened relationships with local indigenous people over many years, and they were part of a presentation at GA this year that talked about their work and others’ in Washington and Oregon. Our Indigenous Peoples’ Day service will introduce us to intentions and actions that can move us beyond a land acknowledgement and toward authentic relationships with our indigenous neighbors and support for the issues important to them.

Lynn Roesch has been a long-time member of East Shore and has been on numerous Ministry Teams. She and fellow East Shore member, Marilyn Mayers, began offering indigenous events in 2015 to educate other congregants about our indigenous neighbors. Relationships with several Coast Salish tribes further inspired them to develop what has become the Indigenous Connections team.

Carrie Bowman has worked in a variety of professions:  outdoor/backcountry instructor, middle and high school teacher, gardener (at UW and the Seattle Public Library), garden design and maintenance, and over 15 years as a librarian in the UW’s Elisabeth C Miller (horticulture) Library and King County Library System.  She has been involved in supporting indigenous people since 2019.
