BIO:
Multi-disciplinary artist, whose work incorporates music production, live performance and graphic design. An avid mountaineer.
Having grown up in the post-industrial bleakness of 90’s Katowice, he was originally drawn to graffiti art, and soon enough to the music that often accompanied it at the time – classic electro and industrial.
These twin interests have fuelled his creative endeavours ever since, leading him on the one hand to study and eventually teach at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts, and on the other to explore sound and rhythm – from early experiments with desktop micro-sampling, through the discovery of analogue synthesis, all the way to immersing himself in the praxis of live performance, spanning full-impact peak-time sets, far out late night odysseys, and extended offbeat improvisations.
Deftly integrating a wide array of tools basic and arcane, vintage and state-of-the-art, Chino creates machine music par excellence, with a stark, brutalist property to it, but never without a spark of human soul shining through its dense layers. Even in the studio, he remains a live performer at heart, his output having a lot of the spontaneous intensity of his shows.
Chino is also one of the founders of Radar – originally a creditable (if short-lived) Kraków club, surviving as a collective and an event series, both crucial to the city’s underground scene. Apart from regular performances, and taking part in shaping policy, Chino is in charge of Radar’s visual aspect, where his penchant for converging music and art finds one of its most pronounced outlets.
He has been releasing on Recognition, Syntetyk, S1 Warsaw, Holger, Altered States Tapes and Shtum.
His musical exploits have taken him as far as Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Georgia, Netherlands and Albania. And Germany.

🕯 The second guest on Unmasked Theoria, our new interview series focused on vinyl labels, is Lee Adams, founder of Khemia Records, Kaos London events and a long-time friend of ours at Unmasked. 🕯

Talking about music in the current situation feels difficult and strange at times, but it´s after an interview like this that one realises how resourceful music people are, and how life inspires creativity in our world, no matter what. 🌹

2021 marks the 5th anniversary of Khemia and the 18th of Kaos, and it felt just like the right time to have a chat with their founder, Lee Adams and talk about the past and the future of his projects.

Together with the interview that came out yesterday, Lupus, another great friend of both ours and Kaos, has prepared for us a mix made just of tracks released on Khemia. In this journey you will find a taster of the eclectic spectrum of sounds that make Khemia Records one of our favourite London labels.

The Forgotten CCL: Amélie Ravalec

Dave Sumner returns with a new Function record, entitled Awakening From The Illusory Self. Released as a 12" EP on Tresor Records, it follows on from Existenz, his last full-length album released in November 2019.

Packed in a beautiful sleeve printed with 3 x special Neon colors, Tresor.320 kicks off with the fast techno of 'Misinterpretations Of Reality', it features a minimal acid-infected crescendo and throbbing pulse. As ever with Function, this idiosyncratic rhythmic work finds a place out on a limb from contemporaries, shapeshifting impulses that infer and guide this raw drum sound.
The second track 'An Optical Illusion Of Consciousness', Function moves towards a different direction, bringing more elements to the mix. It recalls the Dutch 90s techno sound with its melodic blurred synth leanings stretching and morphing across saturated, playful drums and hefty low-end movement. Its bind is perfectly weighted, a phenomenal track that nurtures its inner dancefloor soul as melodies fade away and tighter patterns take precedence.
'Spiritually Unconscious' points to all the trademarks of Function's celebrated sound. A smooth 909 groove underpins bubbling atmospheres and hallucinatory effects, and a nod to the Motor City vision with its fleeting synth strings
At the core is potent, repetitive simplicity, its beat playing with weight and dynamics but never at risk of being lost. Closing track 'Compulsive Thinking - Repetitive and Pointless' kicks a juddering swagger, finding public addressed system emissions drenched in reverb resonating above bleak analogic synth drones. It haunts and creeps towards a thunderous apex, finding its depth in sparse drum movements.

An enduring fixture in the techno and electronic music landscape, Sumner continues to step through new terrains, reinforcing his spike and vision. Awakening From The Illusory Self finds him as ever delivering the goods in elating moments of pure club heft.

Tresor.320 releases April 16th on 12” and digital.
