Disquiet Junto Project 0623: Kinda Bluetooth
The Assignment: Experiment with the sonic qualities of a failing signal.

The end of a calendar year is often a time of reflection. With that in mind, this week we’re revisiting an old Disquiet Junto project from back in early 2019.

Step 1: Find some sort of Bluetooth-enabled audio connection that is available to you. It might be headphones or a microphone or some other device. The important thing is that audio can be sent to one device from another device by Bluetooth.

Step 2: Experiment with a sound sent via Bluetooth using the connection decided upon in Step 1. Work to find situations in which Bluetooth begins to fail — that is, where the sonic signature of that signal failure becomes apparent. This will likely be due to distance, but you may find other creative approaches to achieve the distortion.

Step 3: Use the situation(s) located in Step 2 as the basis for an original piece of music, stressing an audio signal and then recording the way that signal distorts due to the failure of Bluetooth.

Disquiet Junto Project 0623: Kinda Bluetooth

All sounds you hear are derived from a recording of the remote headphone connection breaking up whilst playing the haiku original. You can see the 'recording setup' in the middle of the accompanying image.

Went To See The Dentist (To Fix my Bluetooth) disquiet0623

This was a fun one. I decided to make use of my "specdrums" set, which is composed of two blue tooth "rings" that respond to colours as a trigger for sounds contained within an app on my phone. My phone was tethered via blue tooth to my mixing console, so the process was basically me triggering samples from the "specdrums" library while walking in and out of my studio and "playing" the interrupted signals. I then conjured up the spirits of John Oswald and John Cage and chopped up the recorded tracks using chance and layered them in Logic. I then threw a few effects at the whole mess, again by chance and not design: StepFX, Space Designer, Spectral Gate, Spreader and Phat FX.

Decided to go with rhythmic/percussive samples for the first stage of the project. The three samples, variations of the same patch, were created using Lorre-Mill Double Knot V3 processed through a Comb Room delay. The audio was recorded into Ableton Live and exported without any effects. Have fun!

I used a drum kit made from a sample of water dripping in a hotel bathtub, obviously warped in various ways.  I used a sequencer that triggers the samples in a random way then I went back and did some editing, leaving some pauses.

I wanted to create something simple and circular that could stand alone for this first part of the @disquiet trio project. Using the Silver Age piano preset on Logic Pro with no effects, I repeat the note sequence D, G, D, A, F# eight times, sometimes letting the D and A overlap. There is no bpm to this and the only alterations I made when listening to this several times after recording this sequence, was to reduce the velocity on many of the notes to evoke an almost 'not really playing' quality to the piece.

Looking forward to hearing if anyone takes this further.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
