Recorded, mixed and mastered on 25 Apr 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa. This was also Day 1364 of the 100 Day Project.

Process notes - 

I first thought of scraping my iPhone against a stone. Then, I free-associated “stone” with “pizza stone” and then “LP.” Right after that I thought to capture some LP surface noise, and came right around to using one of Yoko’s albums…so…not the music but the physical object. I looked around my landlady’s backyard and found a slightly mysterious pile of stones and I was off.

I made 2 sets of four short recordings. Mid-way, I decided to get "elemental" with it, too.

- Two recordings were outdoor "air" recordings, including some dogs.
- One other recording was scraping my iPhone against a stack of stones.
- Indoors, I recorded the kitchen sink (water, and yes everything including the kitchen sink) and also lighting matches I keep for my barbecue (fire).
- The second set of recordings was of the inner groove noise from my copy of Yoko's Fly double album. The last recording included switching briefly to the radio (white noise) and then my own struggling to get the two disks back into the jacket.

For this, I used similar methods, (and an Ableton Live template), I’d used for Disquiet Juntos 0530, 0605, 0606, 0609 & 0616, all which reference “minimally viable music” as we did in 0530, my first Junto. This included many Ableton Live effects devices and some Max for Live devices by Amazing Noises.

For what it is is worth, Junto 0530 also was the genesis of this album - [Something That Once Was (Free)](https://music.blisterpop.com/album/something-that-once-was-free). Eventually, this piece and 0605, 0606, 0609 & 0616 will all be worked into the follow-up.

How do you interpret the literal translation of karaoke - empty orchestra? 

Well I had a go; started with opening the BBC orchestra Plug in - spitfire audio - violins.  Made something very simple and looped it.
I had this playing through my main stereo which my decks are plugged into.. I let this playing on a loop and went down the hall in my house and used my digital tascam recorder to record from the far end of the house. I left this recording. 
I went back to the decks and selected an old classical record - Ketelbey Orchestral Concert - Bells Across the Meadow. I played this slowed down as low as my turntable can go, with no bass and treble to full... slowly faded this in. Near the end I pulled the 'earth' cable out the back of the mixer so it goes a bit crackly and caused one of the speakers to cut out. Perfect! 

That was more or less it. I opened this recording back up in Ableton and edited for a bit longer, reversing bits and adding extra effects.

Disquiet Junto Project 0646: Empty Orchestra
The Assignment: Interpret the literal translation of “karaoke.”

Step 1: You may or may not be familiar with the literal meaning of the word “karaoke.” The first two syllables are the Japanese word for “empty.” The final two syllables are an abbreviation of the Japanese word for “orchestra.” Consider how the term “empty orchestra” connects with the idea of karaoke.

Step 2: Think about the term “empty orchestra” on its own, apart from its association with karaoke. Come up with a new meaning for it. What kind of genre or musical form would “empty orchestra” be on its own?

Step 3: Record a piece of music exemplifying the ideas that arose to you during Step 2.
