The title of this song is from the 1960s detective novel “The Dance of Genghis Cohn”, in which a police investigation of the murder of two dozen men (whose corpses were found with their pants off and an expression of ineffable bliss on their faces) serves as a thinly veiled psychological analysis of postwar Germany and its failures to fully confront the Holocaust. The melody is loosely based on an old klezmer jam called Dem Rebns Nign.

‘Meshiakh Sudenyu’ or ‘A Sudenyu’ is an old Yiddish call-and-response song made up of questions and answers about the ‘Great Feast’ in Heaven after the coming of Messiah.There have been numerous parodies of the song, including one about Soviet Russia in the 1920s.  For example, the lyrics read: “Who will read the Torah? Lenin rabeynu. Who will conduct war in the sovdepenyu? Trotsky, the Hero.” There have also been parodies about Jewish life in the Holocaust, sung in Transnistria. The lyrics read: “What will happen when the Messiah comes? All murderers and torturers will vanish and all the prisons and camps will open”.

2020 has been a chaotic, hellish year - and difficult times breed messianic hope. But, as we all know, life after the vaccine won't be a blissful feast. In our home (so-called Australia), we're facing a housing crisis as deferred rents come due and eviction moratoriums end, the continuation of a draconian border regime (presided over by Immigration Minister Peter Dutton), the Reaganite policies of our Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and dehumanising 'jobseeker' programs operated by companies like Sarina Russo.
