In this episode I speak with Nicole, who is a Los Angeles- based Licensed Clinical Social Worker working in education in various capacities as a psychiatric social worker.

Nicole and I talk about all things mental health, including what mental health challenges come up in schools, how young Black girls get targeted in schools, the crucial role of educators when it comes to school policing, getting youth of color mental health resources,and what she thinks of the # defundthepolice.

Lauren Keeler has been working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for the last 16 years. She has worked with individuals with disabilities in home, community and school settings. She is currently working as a Behavior Intervention Specialist. 

In addition to her “day job,” Lauren has been featured as a co-author in the book Coffee & Conversation: Warm Cups of Self-Care, co-host of Mirror of Minds podcast, and creator of The Bx Collective which focuses on mindfulness and behavioral support education.

We also talk about individuals with developmental disabilities, including media portrayals of them,  the importance of early assessment when it comes to diagnosis, acknowledging adverse childhood experiences, and recognizing cultural differences. Kimberly Turner is a jewelry designer, visual artist, educator and an advocate for both girls and endometriosis awareness. She is the Owner, Designer and Stylist of her jewelry and art business, Elizabeth In Pearls, named after her grandmothers. As an educational consultant she provides workshops and coaching to youth-serving agencies, non-profits, and corporate organizations. 

In our conversation, Kimberly and I talk about Elizabeth in Pearls, her experience living with endometriosis, her advocacy work, and why painful menstrual cycles are not normal despite the conventional wisdom. Enjoy the conversations.

Liku Madoshi is a Bay Area attorney and the founder and creator of Tryb, a network for professional Black women striving to help one another in their passions, professions and pursuits. Tryb curates events focused on the wealth and wellness for Black women entrepreneurs, business owners and career professionals.


Liku and I talked about her work as an attorney, the complexities around labor laws in the time of the gig economy, the mental Olympics Black women have to do on a daily basis, and what ultimately drove her to found Tryb.

Lara Mendel is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Mosaic Project.  Since its founding in 2000, Mosaic has provided over 65,000 individuals – from elementary school students to adults in the workplace – with the skills they need to build the inclusive, just, equitable communities they envision. Prior to founding Mosaic, Lara worked extensively in violence-prevention and with youth in five countries promoting understanding of self and others. She is a Black Belt in Kajukenbo Kung Fu and received a BA and MA in Anthropology from Stanford University.

Lara and I talk about the 2020 election and the importance of staying optimistic, even when things look dreary. She also talks about how her kung fu practice informs her work combating racism and how The Mosaic Project's signature program almost took an unusual turn. Enjoy the conversation.
