씻을 때는 내가 왠지 대단한 곡을 쓸 수 있을 것 같은 착각에 빠지곤 한다. 샤워 부스 안에서 요란하게 뜨거운 김을 내뿜으며 비누칠을 하고, 머리카락에 묻은 거품을 씻어내고, 떠오른 아이디어를 각국 언어로 지껄여보다가 타월로 몸을 꽁꽁 싸매고… 그리고 샤워 부스 문을 열고 바깥에 발을 내딛으면 말라 사라져 버리는 물기 마냥 그 대단한 아이디어 들이 없어져 버린다. 그리곤 생각한다. 뭘까, 마치 엄청난 개꿈을 꾼 것 같은데 까먹었네… 같은. 그럴 때면 이 세상이 가짜인지 진짜인지 헷갈리게 된다. 비슷하게 약물에 취했을 때 겪는 경험들, 꿈, 아니면 정말 꿈같은 상황에 놓였을 때. 우리는 현실을 믿고 싶을 때도, 부정하고 싶을 때도 있는 법이다. 그렇다면 이런 의문이 든다. 과연 현실과 비현실의 경계는 무엇일까? 


When I shower, I often fall into the misconception that I can compose a magnificent piece. Inside the shower booth, I emit a noisy rush of hot steam, lather myself with soap, rinse off the foam from my hair, and babble about the ideas that come to mind in different languages. Then I tightly wrap my body in a towel, and as I open the shower booth door and step outside, those grand ideas vanish, just like the moisture drying up and disappearing. Then I contemplate. What was it? It's as if I had an incredible dream but forgot... In those moments, I become even confused about whether this world is real or fake. Similar experiences occur when under the influence of drugs, in dreams, or when placed in situations that feel like dreams. We have a natural inclination to want to believe in reality and to deny it at times. This raises the question: What is the boundary between reality and unreality?


Wenn ich dusche, verfalle ich oft dem Irrglauben, dass ich ein großartiges Stück komponieren kann. In der Duschkabine strömt ein lautes Geräusch von heißem Dampf, ich seife mich mit Seife ein, spüle den Schaum aus meinem Haar und plaudere in verschiedenen Sprachen über die Ideen, die mir in den Sinn kommen. Dann wickle ich meinen Körper fest in ein Handtuch und während ich die Duschkabinentür öffne und nach draußen trete, verschwinden diese grandiosen Ideen genauso wie die Feuchtigkeit, die sich verflüchtigt und verschwindet. Dann denke ich nach. Was war es? Es ist, als hätte ich einen unglaublichen Traum gehabt, aber ihn vergessen... In diesen Momenten werde ich noch verwirrter darüber, ob diese Welt real oder fake ist. Ähnliche Erfahrungen treten auf, wenn man unter dem Einfluss von Drogen steht, in Träumen oder in Situationen, die sich wie Träume anfühlen. Wir haben eine natürliche Neigung, an die Realität glauben zu wollen und sie manchmal zu leugnen. Das wirft die Frage auf: Wo liegt die Grenze zwischen Realität und Irrealität?

Program Notes:

'Gyaling' (also gya ling, gya-ling, jahlin, jah-lin, jahling, jah-ling, rGya-gling) is a double reed instrument of Tibetan music. It is played in the Tibetan monasteries, especially during the puja, which is a daily practice of religious reverence, and the welcoming of lamas and rinpoches.

The instrument belongs to the family of kegeloboen, as well as the Indian shehnai and the Chinese suona. It's played always with circular breathing and produces a high, shrill sound. In the invocation rituals of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, wind instruments always play in pairs.
