For this reason, a German translation is provided below. We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects will be played publicly as part of the Rauschlabor Schützenmatte (musikfestivalbern.ch) or broadcast on the festival’s radio show, Radio Antenne (radioantenne.ch). If you don’t want your recording to be used in this way, please note so wherever you post it.

Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the German word “rauschen,” the theme for this year’s festival. Understand that “rauschen” is noise in the sense of white noise, waterfall noise, background noise, static, wind in trees, rain, etc. The blurred, diffuse, continuous kind of noise, not short individual non-tonal sounds.

-converted the mixdown to midi, in live8 ran it through a slow arp with the original sample in iris2 again and some ambient reverb

The pen name “an’ya” loosely translates into “a peaceful surprise light in the moonless night”. Disquiet Junto Project 0404: Seven (St)ages
The Assignment: Record a piece of music that follows the arc of Jacques’ “All the world’s a stage” speech from Shakespeare’s play As You Like It.

Step 1: This project is inspired by a famous speech from William Shakespeare’s play As You Like It. The speech is the one that begins “All the world’s a stage,” and is spoken by the melancholy character Jacques.

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the speech, in which Jacques lists the “seven ages” that people move through over the course of their lives, should they lead full and long ones: the infant, the student (“schoolboy” in the play), the lover, the soldier, the justice, old age, and the final decline (likened to a “second childishness and mere oblivion”).

Step 3: Consider how those seven ages might be explored in musical terms. Consider concepts in the original text, such as how in old age “his big manly voice, / Turning again towards childish treble, pipes / And whistles in his sound.”

Step 4: Record a piece of music that occurs in seven stages, following the seven ages of Jacques’ speech. One possibility is to have seven related pieces of music, as i na suite, that represent the ages. Another is to have one consistent source audio throughout, but to treat/filter/process it in accordance with each successive (st)age.

split into 3 sections - about 4,5 and 9 minutes long
used iris 2 vocal doubler and ddly, played for 4 minutes, notes D E B (corresponded to 4 5 and 9)
more chorus and cello sounds in the 2nd section, a fouths chord, and fifths randomization
more chorus reverb and an arpeggio in the 3rd section gradually increasing pitch

the sections were meant to correspond to the lines of the haiku (but i think the first section sounds more like a cherry blossom) and also the development is meant to be gradual

Today we start our 300th Haiku challenge. It feels like an incredible milestone and, looking back at how this project has been filling my life with new friends and music for the last 5 years, I’m grateful to all of you for keeping it alive and inspiring. the following are 11 random environmental/animal sounds collected from 'yellowstone park' on Terra (native nomenclature: earth); a boundaried and somewhat curated aspect of the landscape.
the recording follows some of the conventions of the dominant species' music (base frequency 130.813Hz, layering, repetitive rhythm, repeated sounds, approximations of music instruments: ableton live8, protoplasm tsmpro)
the natural frequencies are very low compared to what we are used to so you'll want to raise this considerably. the sounds are generally unadorned but some work has been done in raising frequencies so it's slightly less unpleasant. the goal is to distinguish between sounds to produce an internal network of 11 concurrent tracks. on average it will take about 4.75 terra minutes to traverse from cacophony to concurrence.

Disquiet Junto Project 0406: Phoneme Home
The Assignment: After a visit to Yellowstone National Park, you send a sonic report back to your planet of origin.

Step 1: You’re an extraterrestrial visiting Earth from your home planet. Like many tourists, you’re in awe of the beauty of Yellowstone National Park. You make a bunch of audio recordings of the wildlife. You surreptitiously post those recordings at the following URL. Check them out:

Step 2: Since this is your first trip to Earth, you can’t really tell one animal from another, bird or human or wolf. i was staying in the northumberland countryside last week and had the time and space to listen to birds.

funnily enough i took a robert macfarlane book with me but it wasnt til the project came thru that i picked it up. woller is a word in that book (landmarks) for a seal waddle (saw lots of seals around farne and stockton)

i'd recorded a load of birds at a junction waiting for a train to pass, there were loads of sparrows, jackdaws and tits; not sure what else

i denoised and converted the recording to midi so you could say it's composed by the birds.
ran thru zynfx ddly and freqecho then had the recording of the birds appended towards the end
