Valentine's Day is a Catholic celebration held annually on February 14th in commemoration of the good deeds performed by Saint Valentine of Rome, associated with the universal concept of love and affection. Originated by the Catholic Church as a counterbalance to the pagan festivities in the Roman Empire, it is also one of the early celebrations that signified the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Eurafrasia.

Jacinto Uc de los Santos, known as Jacinto Canek (Kaan éek', which in the Mayan language means black snake or snake of the star), took on this nickname or "coco kaba" inspired by the recurrent name of the governing authoritie or "jalach wíinik" of the Itzáes, who constituted the last stronghold of the Maya population, which ended up isolated and resisted Spanish conquest for almost a hundred and fifty years, until the late seventeenth century, in Tayasal, near Lake Petén Itzá, from where they had originally departed fifteen centuries earlier to populate the Yucatán Peninsula. Jacinto Uc adopted the nickname on the eve of the rebellion.
