This is the second song I wrote for my first songwriting class. I like this song. The brief was to use the line "but alas, I cannot swim to the other side" a line my partner recognised immediately from a Laura Marling song. I was surprised how easy the lyrics came, inspired by a couple of friends from my youth, may they rest in peace, forever remembered with love.

This song is about early recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. It's really about people coming into a drug and alcohol rehab - about the difficulty people face when they have to commit to a thing they don't really want to do in order to attain the freedom they desire. Tough compromises.

I can hear a lot of stuff I would change, and I was still also using my headphones as an interface at this stage, but I like how the song ended up working.
