What would you do if you saw someone having a heart attack?  Most people call 911 and call for someone who knows CPR - or start it themselves, if they’re trained.  Do you think you could do it?  Fiona Johnson, Director of the Johnson County Ambulance Service, tells us about a new online application that alerts bystanders that know CPR when a cardiac arrest is nearby. The app can even direct them to the nearest A-E-D and provide clear and easy-to-follow instructions on how to use it. Citizen responders help save lives. Check out the Craft Guild of Iowa City, operating since 1939, and one of the area's artistic gems! Terry Jones talks about the Guild's history, current activities and more in this edition of The Situation Room. The Craft Guild of Iowa City is a non-profit organization of crafters from throughout East Central Iowa who come together to share knowledge and promote interest in traditional crafts and opportunities for creative development. The crafts currently practiced by members include ceramics, spinning, weaving, knitting, quilting, beading and  ply-split braiding. Membership is open to those 18 years and older who want to explore, expand and share their skills.

Almost every day, we hear news of a mass shooting somewhere in America, and more reports of gun violence and accidents. The Pew Research Center reports 8 to 10 of all murders or suicides involve guns, and the sad fact is that rescue is almost never possible when a gun has been involved.

In many states, including Iowa, legislation has decreased restrictions on gun ownership and regulation. There are, nevertheless, measures to help ensure a safer approach to gun use. Temple Hiatt, Johnson County Local Group Lead and Iowa Be SMART Lead, talks about project Be SMART for Kids and how measures like “secure storage” help reduce incidences of gun violence and accidents.

Sometimes called “black gold,” Iowa’s deep, rich soils are a treasure that formed over thousands of years under the very best of the world’s grasslands—the tallgrass prairie.In the last hundred years, large-scale intensive agriculture and urban development have severely degraded most of our soils. In this edition of Teaching Each Other, Jim Larew's guest is Dr. Kathleen Woida. She worked as a geologist in Utah, New Mexico, and Iowa for twenty-six years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, and recently retired as adjunct associate professor in the University of Iowa’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Author of ""Iowa's Remarkable Soils: The Story of Our Most Vital Resource and How We Can Save It" (Bur Oak Book0, she documents how some innovative Iowans are beginning to repair and regenerate their soils by treating them as the living ecosystem and vast carbon store that they are. To paraphrase Aldo Leopold, these new pioneers are beginning to see their soils as part of a community to which they and their descendants belong, rather than commodities belonging to them.

You probably know someone who has been affected by breast cancer; you may even have been affected yourself.  Breast cancer rate is growing, with increasing occurrence in younger patients.

Team Breast Friends is a local nonprofit that raises funds to support breast cancer patients in the Corridor, through mammograms and other diagnopstics, educational materials, and financial aid for un-or under-insured patients

Patty Frantz, the organization's treasurer, tells us about Team Breast Friends mission and how it came into being, and the work they do. Also, learn about some of the most fun fundraising events they hold, including their 5K Rack Run, coming up October 13th.  Where else can you get to sign a pink firetruck?

All proceeds will remain here in the community to provide mammograms, other diagnostic treatment and support services for those impacted by breast cancer.

SR Team Breast Friends 5K 10th Anniversary 9-12-2024

On this Green Room IC episode, we welcome a native of Iowa City back to town.  Amy Kolen grew up and was educated in Iowa City and now lives in Colorado.  Amy’s recently released book is "Inside Voices: A Prison Choir, My Mother and Me".  Amy was Kolen was a member of the Oakdale Community Choir, a collaboration of incarcerated men and community members singing together. 

Music used is courtesy of Mary Cohen of the Oakdale Community Choir.  Songs are from the Inside Outside Songwriting Collaboration project.  The opening music "Welcome" is by Sara Garnier and Oakdale Choir member Dan Hicks.

When Iowans go to the polls on November 5th, we’ll be voting for candidates for President and Congress,  Soil and Water Conservation District Commissions, and County Agricultural Extension Councils. Don't forget to look further: The ballot will also include two proposed amendments to the state constitution.  Johnson County Voters will also be asked to vote on a bond issue, a public conservation measure.

Brad Friedhof, Interim Director and Conservation Program Manager at Johnson County Conservation, and Pat Heiden, chair of the "Our Land, Our Water, Our Future" Committee explain what's in the measure, how it works, purpose in terms of stewardship, the community and public health, and what the county has been able to accomplish with the previous conservation bond measure.

Dr. Maureen McCue joins the Situation Room to talk about her book "Dancing in a Disabled World."  Her thoughts reflect her experience as a guardian of a person with a disability; her service as chair of the local board for Physicians  for Social Responsibility; and her thoughts on how society and policy measure up to the need.  Is the attitude and care toward disabled persons a mark of a society's ability   - or disability ?  About the bookl, she writes: "My evolving realizations about the varied meanings, range of, and social confusion and costs of carrying a disability label at any age are woven in and out of the narrative.  In fact, I turn the whole concept on it's head and explore questions of what makes us valued as humans, how do we know what we know about disability, and what do we as a society value?  Lastly I ask how do some of our unquestioned values lead to disability -- at home and abroad?  In short, the book amounts to a series of ruminations on the politics and social history of disability and what that term means for each of us since in the end, we are all just an accident, an infection, an errant gene or bad policy away from disability. "

Joining Beverly Mead in the Green Room IC were: Tom Milligan, Director and Jodi Moore, Stage Manager.  Also joining the conversation were cast members: Jennifer Beall, Eric Dunlap, Ron Gilbert, Lisa Margolin and Michael Raabe.
