Today’s mix is a winding road through the mind of Ataxy aka David Eßer. The Hamburg-based ambient producer has been enveloping listeners in a warm blanket of sound and texture for over a decade. His skill in production brings such a fantastic dynamic and depth in his releases that it’s an instant hook for more on first listen. > My name is Gabe Holcombe and I run Lillerne, a small cassette imprint based in Chicago, IL USA. 

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

> I wanted to highlight some new/unreleased material on Lillerne, as well as some older break/illbient material that I've been enjoying. And some old and new ambient favorites. 

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

> It seems like a nice collection of tunes for a walk around the city, or perhaps a soundtrack to a seat on a chair in the yard. I've been trying to make mixes lately that feel good to hear while being outdoors.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

> My cat, Ted : )

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

> I'm spending a good amount of the summer in a rural area working on some projects outside of Lillerne. But I will continue to run the label in the woods and try to keep the music coming.

Merph is Sarita Carol Herse, one of Sydney’s most innovative and exploratory DJ-producers. Since first emerging on the Australian scene over a year ago, her mixes, music and Apparent Motion show have become synonymous with the high-intensity sounds of drum & bass, jungle and dubstep, but Herse’s musical palette extends well beyond the constraints of the dancefloor.

Her Theory Therapy mix is proof of that. It retains the DJ’s deft ear for emotionally moving, immersive soundscapes but eschews the sounds of the club entirely. Compiled in the warm, inviting atmosphere of her best friend’s home in Canberra, her selections comprise of ambient, improvisational jazz, ethereal vocals and spoken word pieces.

As hinted at by the more introspective sounds she’s gravitated towards, Merph’s mix is a highly personal one. The DJ and producer has said that it follows her own experiences lately, from coping with isolation to having important but emotionally exhausting conversations about race and racism. “I’ve been processing a lot of rage and sadness about this, as well as confusion and shame about feeling the need to justify myself to people” she told us. Over 14 tracks, her selections masterfully convey these emotions. From the pensive sadness of ‘(Something)’ by Planning For Burial to the calming tones of Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s ‘Sunset Village’ to the inspiring and sublime ‘Scarlett’ by Frederik Valentin & Loke Rahbek, Theory Therapy 11 is a powerful, emotionally complex story we all ought to listen to. It can be soothing, dissonant, hopeful, restorative and inspiring, often all at once.

In 1999, Kaoru Inoue released his debut album, Spring to Summer as Chari Chari. Available via File Records—and picked up shortly after by Portuguese label Última—the Sagamihara-born artist expertly blended ambient, tribal, house and jazz instrumentation into twelve elegant, electro-acoustic compositions.

Listening back to the album now, knowing the work Inoue has gone on to do, it’s easy to see the eclectic Spring as a marker for things to come. Since first getting into music and DJing in the early ‘90s, the Tokyo-based producer has released several records under his own name and as Chari Chari, started his own label, formed a minimal acoustic guitar band and became a highly respected DJ, both domestically and internationally. Last year, he released We hear the last decades dreaming, his first LP as Chari Chari in over 18 years and maybe the best of his career. Like his debut, dreaming displays a preternatural understanding of timbre, texture and atmosphere. It begins with the hiss of a departing train and moves from intricate Balearic percussion to ECM-inspired guitar solos to more hypnagogic ambient. It’s a record imbued with a sense of forward movement, and in a year as stationary as 2020, it offered some respite from the stasis.

Inoue’s sets, like his music, are equally captivating. His mix perfectly encapsulates the concept behind the series (every guest is given the same brief, to share with us the music they personally find therapeutic). His recording pieces together the sounds of gongs, chimes, meditative incantations, gorgeous acoustic and electronic arrangements and other ethereal sounds. The whole mix is blanketed with field recordings and each track moves seamlessly into the next. As with his own production style, it intertwines the old and the new, featuring music from Sarah Davachi, Paul Giger, The Entourage Music and Theatre Ensemble, as well as Sydney’s own Santilli.
