Writing Fade to Black was a release of a lot of frustration that had built up during my time away from music. I've often noticed that when people hear about someone else's troubles, they tend to trivialize them with mundane coined responses framed as "advice." During my inner struggles, I got a lot of that, and it drove me crazy. I swore that if one more person told me to try to "breathe" I was going to hold my breath until I died just to spite them. 

This song very simply asks for people to leave me alone and stop patronizing me with their unwanted assistance.  I am negative at times, and I can be a little unstable. However, I believe that some of my most desperate moments have spawned some of my most profound thoughts. I think there are others that feel that way too, and I wanted to write something to say to those people, I'm with you. You don't want to calm down. You don't want to keep forging ahead. You don't want to pretend to care about the things and people that you don't. You don't need anyone's prayers. You want to be angry, and you want to tune them out. I wanted to say, do it. Be irrational. Be dramatic. Be passionate. Don't let anyone tell you how you should feel or act. Those are decisions to be made by us and us alone, and if we truly feel that strongly, we'll be willing to deal with the consequences. 

Fading to black is a metaphor for an ending, and this song represented the ending of my tolerance for these gestures. I wanted to be crazy again, because crazy is a big part of who I am, and I wanted myself back. With my outlet back, I felt that I could finally tell all of those people vying to be my savior to shut up, leave me alone, and watch me use my angst to create something powerful. I also wanted to empower those who suffer jumping some of the mental hurdles that I do to know they're not alone in their frustration with people's constant mental pokes and prods.

This is a piece I composed in the style of the PS1 Spyro the Dragon series music which was composed by the former Police drummer Stewart Copeland. All of the patterns are composed by me, I was just inspired by the vibe of the music from the games as i used to play it like crazy when I was a kid and so the music has stuck in my ears :)

Just a little demonstration on what Negative Harmony can sound like.

Starting from a basic I - vi - IV - V progression in C, I first invert the chords and adjust the melody slightly to fit over the new chords.

The second time (starting around [00:14]), the chords AND the melody are inverted, which creates an even different sound.
