Here’s another poem by Tan Taigi, also author of the inspiring haiku we posted last week. The poem we publish today was translated by Michael Haldane.

Tan Taigi was a haiku poet of the Edo period. He was a wanderer for most of his life and admired by Yosa Buson for his ability to transcend his eclectic and unconventional lifestyle with sublime poetry.

Disquiet Junto Project 0485: Strange Weather
The Assignment: Remix the pure sounds of Chris Kallmyer’s traveling wind chimes to your own musical purposes.

This is the second of two projects in a row we’re doing with artist Chris Kallmyer. You needn’t have participated in the previous one to do this one. First, some background: Kallmyer’s “Two hearts are better than one” is a pair of wind chimes, one of which is depicted in this week’s cover image, crisscrossing Los Angeles at the height of the pandemic. Installed at homes for week-long listening sessions, the chimes formed a duet across a city and provided intimate experiences with sound for 16 families sheltering at home. Step 1: Chris has provided us with a recording of the wind chimes, a little over five minutes long. The audio was cleaned up by Alex Hawthorn to maximize the clarity of the chimes themselves, removing much of the background sound, thus situating the chimes in what might be thought of as a platonic space. Access the wav file at dropbox.com.

Step 2: Do what you wish this the chimes. Remix them to your musical heart’s content. The one request is that at least once in your recording, let the source audio be heard clearly.

My process:
All sounds generated from the source audio.  Samples chopped and sequenced in Renoise.

Yamaguchi Sodo, whose real name was Nobuaki, was a haiku poet and a flood control expert during the Edo period. A contemporary of Matsuo Basho, Yamaguchi Sodo met the Great Master for the first time in 1675; the two poets soon became close friends and exchanged letters until the death of Basho in 1694.

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

Tachibana Hokushi, whose real name was Tachibana Genjiro, was born in Kanazawa in 1665. Hokushi was one of Basho’s most famous students at the time, and he even accompanied the great master during part of his famous journey through the narrow roads of the North, from Kanazawa to Matsuoka.

In haiku poetry, "Kigo" is a seasonal reference, a word or group of words which locates the poem in a season of the year, the seasonal association helping the reader imagine the atmosphere and settings of the poem more vividly. Kigo evokes memories and feelings which vary depending on the readers themselves: their active role is crucial in haiku poetry as different cultural and historical backgrounds may lead to a different interpretation of the poem.

The Nightfall is a collection of four composition, each one inspired by a seasonal haiku, by Serbo-Croatian artist Manja Ristić. By combining abstract electronics, haunting soundscapes and field recordings textures, Manja recreates the evocative atmosphere of haiku without using words: just like Kigo in haiku poetry, sounds can evoke memories, images, and associations. The tracks in The Nightfall are moments frozen in time that can be perceived rather than seen, allowing the mind of the listeners to reinterpret in their own way these four deeply moving soundscapes.

Manja Ristić was born in Belgrade (1979). She is a violinist, sound artists, curator and researcher mostly active in the field of electro-acoustics, instrumental improvisation and experimental sound related arts. She graduated at the Belgrade Music Academy (2001), then gained PGDip at the Royal College of Music in London (2004). Her work is largely focused on exploration of synesthesia in AV performance, intuitive composition and sound ecology. Sound art merges instrumental improvisation with field recording and electronics, developing concepts of creative listening.

Manja collaborated with wide range of artists, performers, conductors, movie and theatre directors. She is a founder and president of the Association of Multimedia Artists “Auropolis”, since 2004. She lives on the island of Korčula, in South Adriatic.

Transit and Passages by Larbjo is the result of explorations into the sonics of airports, underground stations, railway bridges, stairways and elevators; places whose purpose is to enable movement and transition. The title suggests a focus on the transformative dimension rather than the actual physical location. The voices that appear in these environments are not primarily tools of verbal communication, they should rather be regarded as residues, traces of human presence with uncertain durations and trajectories.

Lars Björk uses condenser and contact microphones when collecting sounds although occasionally diving into radio transmissions and bits & pieces picked up in the continuous digital flow. Sound fragments and field recordings are mashed up and reconfigured using various software applications and hardware devices. The music, released under the moniker Larbjo, takes the listener on audiological expeditions into uncharted territories.
