Roughing up accessible sounds has been a theme throughout @Marquis-Hawkes' career, and nowhere has it been so clear than on his debut for Houndstooth.  

Four upfront house jams, each demonstrating a different side to Hawkes’ production talent, take in jazz-inflected deepness, disco flavours, quirky cyberpop through to futuristic funk. Think Prince meets Neneh Cherry, held hostage by Gene Hunt’s relentless 909 selections. 

Despite the variety of influences on display, a contiguous thread is maintained, something also reflected in his DJ sets, their all-encompassing yet coherent nature winning over fans far and wide.

“Girl I Bet” was created and inspired in response to recording artist Ciara and her first 2015 release “I Bet.” The lyrics in Antonio Ramsey remake takes on and embody the story of so many emotions and feelings of those that have been in and out of love. Antonio collaborated with singer/songwriter JWhales of #Dreamkingz to create this awesome rendition that is sure to take flight!

Marquis Hawkes is back on Houndstooth with a considerable punch, ladies and gents. After a string of tuff-as-nail releases on the imprint — including Sweet and Raw Materials — his debut album is now complete. 

Social Housing, as you'll soon learn, is an ode to not-for-profit, association-managed social housing in Berlin; a system that us Brits could learn a thing or two from, but that's another matter. "Fantasy" does exactly what it says on the tin, providing the sonic equivalent of someplace euphoric and sun-splashed during mid-August. Although firmly four-to-the-floor territory, the funk and disco influences are hard to ignore here. Cascading hi-hats, shiny arp work and detuned trumpet blares all coalesce to make this a real jam. That and those chopped-up vocals that Todd Edwards would appreciate.

This is very much Hawkes' own though; soulful and jacking in all the right amounts, and part of a project that's been two years in the making. It comes complete with artwork that's as thought out and auroral. Drawn from a photo taken by Hawkes’ wife in East Berlin, Alan Oldham's (aka DJ T-1000) visual accompaniment is spot on.

Aus Music follow up a string of records from fresh signees Paul Woolford, Tom Trago and Recloose with the return of a long term friend and label favourite Marquis Hawkes. Hot on the heels of his recent LP ‘Social Housing’ - the Berlin based artist lines up ‘Doornroosje’, a tight a two-tracker that remains consistent with his output on Aus: dancefloor-focused jams suffused with simplicity and soul.

‘Discopuss’ kicks things off with a potent combination of samples and hardware as sassy Funk samples are propelled by tough crunching drums. The title track then follows up with piano stabs and busy, percolating synth lines driven at a pacy rate to rapturous effect rounding off another solid addition to Aus Music’s catalogue.
