In 1958, a young, ambitious Billy Noknees stepped into a recording studio for the very first time, eager to make his mark on the music world. Before disco, before metal imagery, before space battles and haunted house freakouts, Billy was just a blues-loving upstart with a deep voice, a cheap guitar, and a dream. His debut track, Gold Chain Heavy, was a slow, smoky blues number about the burden of style, swagger, and having too much gold around your neck.

The session was led by Frankie "Smooth Fingers" Malone, a seasoned bluesman known for his easygoing attitude and refusal to get involved in nonsense. Billy actually listened to directions, and delivered a powerhouse performance, pouring raw emotion into lines like:

Gold chain heavy, neck on froze!
Walk in the room, everybody knows! 
Gold chain heavy, swingin’ wide! 
Too much bling—I broke my ride! 

With a moody upright bass, minimal drums, and Frankie Malone himself adding tasteful piano flourishes, Gold Chain Heavy was shaping up to be a stunning blues debut. The band was tight, Billy’s vocals were rich, and for a fleeting moment, it seemed like history was being made without utter disaster.

But then, the ceiling collapsed.

Midway through the third take, a series of violent cracks echoed through the studio. Before anyone could react, a chunk of the ceiling gave way, sending wooden beams, dust, and insulation crashing down onto the recording space. The drummer barely dodged a falling light fixture, the pianist abandoned ship immediately, and Billy—still clutching the microphone—was completely buried in rubble.

For thirty harrowing seconds, the room fell into silence. Then, from beneath the wreckage, Billy’s muffled voice rang out:

"Was that take good? I can do it again!"

Miraculously, Billy was completely unharmed. His gold chains had somehow shielded his neck from debris, leading him to declare himself invincible and attempt to finish the session in the half-collapsed room. Frankie Malone, however, had seen enough. He salvaged what he could of the recording, packed up his things, and vowed never to work in a building made before 1940 ever again.

Despite the destruction, Gold Chain Heavy was finished, with one of the surviving takes being hastily mixed down and pressed to a short run of 7" singles. The record performed well locally, with modest airplay on blues stations, but Billy, always restless, soon moved on to chasing new musical ambitions.

For years, Gold Chain Heavy was thought lost until a lone surviving copy was unearthed in 2010, wedged inside the walls of what remained of the original studio. Now, remastered with AI-powered precision, the track is finally available in all its bluesy, chain-laden glory.
