Suffolk Song (for Bass Oboe and Accordion) is a a musical portrait of Stoke by Clare, Matthew's home village in Suffolk. 

Stoke by Clare is a very simple and self contained place: some fields, a pub, some houses, a school (where Matthew went from the age of 3 to 16) a village green and a football field (where Matthew played for the village Sunday league football team). Likewise, this piece is made up of just a few short and simple sections. The piece is just nostalgic expression from Matthew, who currently lives in central London - perhaps one of the most complex and noisy places in the world.

Revontulet is Finnish for Northern Lights.  When the northern lights are particularly intense, they can move quite rapidly in an undulating way, and they produce a flickering, static-type sound.  Both this undulating nature and the static sounds are present in my piece.  In addition, I have extended the sound palette of the accordion with electronics that largely are derived from accordion sounds.  The piece often blends the live and pre-recorded sounds in a way that it can be difficult to tell what is being played live, and this adds to the flickering, undulating nature of the piece.
