As always, we are governed by the releases that come in every month; we’ve certainly had our fair share this time of ambient, symphonic, neo-classical & experimental stuff for this podcast. 
In addition to what would have been Vangelis’s 80th birthday, there are tributes from Michael Neil on his album ‘Into Infinity’, & Aural Films, with thirty-seven artists from around the world who have contributed their own reflections on his vast career, four & half hours of music, we’ve selected four tracks from this special collection titled ‘Tears In The Rain’. Someone you may not have heard of, Philip Jeck, who died last year, worked with old records and record players salvaged from junk shops. He really did play them as musical instruments, genuinely creating moving and transfixing music where we hear the art, not the gimmick. On the album ‘Stardust’ he collaborated with Faith Coloocia.

SEQUENCES PODCAST  No 230

With a third of the year already gone by, the so-called pandemic has quietly dropped out from the main media news, but more worrying is the war continuing in Ukraine with no end in sight.
As you know, we’ve supported Ukraine & Russian musicians with no malice to the latter, any music from them kept out of the politics of this war.
The lineup for this edition is mostly names that have appeared before on Sequences, except for Alpha Romeo’s sublime mixes of retro synth urban vibes with quality production.  Beatless mixtures of treated guitar and electronics inspired by nature and effects treatments by Trem 77.  On Tone Science no 7 are modular synthesists Andrew Ostler, three aspects of drones sequences & audio processing, with Dark Sparkler creating a stormy shipwreck of a patch with siren calls & turbulent water., finally Shajan on the relaxing subtle and multi-faceted music from another excellent compilation from BSC Music.
The vintage track comes from the prolific German experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler associated with West Germany's Kraut rock movement, who joined Tangerine Dream for their debut album Electronic Meditation in 1970 and the founder of the band Kluster. Conrad passed away in 2011.

We welcome eight new acts to Sequences, including Christine Ott’s two bands, The Cry, an improvising trio with multiple textures & the duo Snowdrops, a unique combination of contemporary classical, jazz, electronic music and film score. With her distinctive voice Amaya (Maud Of Moth), a Madrid born residing in Edinburgh, dances all over her deftly woven compositions. Not using a name but numbers 58918012 score a pretty dark/melancholic/sad /cinematic and even a bit depressive sound—another stark & desolate release, ‘Hinterland’ from Electronic Death Black Dogs. Norwegian cinematic ambient electronic project LIGHTS A.M has everything from uplifting energy, playful sequences and experimental sound design to fearful moods and melancholic melodies. The collaborative project, From Overseas & City Of Dawn, brought together by a love of melodic guitar-based ambient music and tape loops, wrapping up with Slow Beethoven performed in the empty seven-storey steel water tank’s sonic environment, an extremely resonant space, which this quartet slows the movement drastically, usually seven minutes long to become a unique 44-minute work with Tank’s swirling reverb sustains sounds for up to 40 seconds, “This collaboration has created something that is still Beethoven, yet otherworldly”.

 Modular synths, once considered virtually obsolete, have been one of the most surprising growth areas in music technology over the last decade. It’s great to see the feedback from some of you who enjoyed the Modular/vintage edition. Now, back to our usual look at recent new releases, with another round of superlative sounds from musicians based around the globe. Seven new names added to the list include, Under Water Sleep Orchestra, a nightmarish trip within blurry worlds and a nostalgic journey of dark ambient with a cinematic edge. The duo A Winged Victory Of A Dividing Pair music built on their foundations in ambient and neoclassical. Dramón brings experimental climatic and noisy music inspired by ambient and electronics as the basis of his creation. Incorporating gentle guitar synth flute and percussion, dappled with nature sounds, comes from Carlos Denger.
Known for his performances using lap steel, guitarist Frank Schultz takes a drifting journey into a cavernous and droning ambience. The unusual setup by Edouard Ferlet of two pianos, one of which is mechanical, echoes the work of Philip Glass or Nils Frahm. To stir emotions through well-orchestrated musical choices is William St Hugh.

Sequences Podcast No 237

Those who join us for the first time on Sequences are Terminus Void’s ambient music from Seattle-based American musician. Peruvian avant-garde artist Manongo Mujica uses a fusion of electronics and cello percussion, creating a sound montage of immersive, hypnotic atmospheres. Two from Projekt, Alain Elettronico remixes from the label’s artists, uptempo melodies & rhythm-driven tracks and Swedish composer Henrik Meierkord, who uses the cello as his main instrument to create minimalistic ambient pieces. The View From Vega, an unashamedly vintage-sounding album in all its analogue glory from Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, has six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic melodic soundscapes. Ice Planet 9000’s track ‘Great Cloud’ is a celestial odyssey featuring cosmic soundscapes and music that ascend through a swirling super-massive nebula. We leave you with our two female musicians. Anna Wall’s album ‘Dream Theory’ is about music connecting to our conscious and subconscious mind, exploring sounds across the ambient and experimental spectrum, with Maddy Briggs, an electroacoustic composer based in Sydney, recycles organ and piano recordings as a living, breathing sonic atmosphere.
