This song was gifted to an ex-partner, and brother, of mine. He received Owl Medicine and began working with his first Animal Totem: The Owl. Alongside our journey with this animal was the Mushroom People, Peyote, and the Datura Medicine, which we both worked strongly with over our relationship together. 

Shortly after his receiving of Owl Medicine, I too received an Owl, a Barn Owl. The Owl Medicines are particularly special because they contain the middle grounds of both black and white magic. It is common for Brujos (witches) as well as Curanderos (healers) to work closely with this animal, so the energy of one who begins relationship with this animal can easily be drawn to either paths. 

This Owl Medicine Song was originally written by my partner at the time, but it has been a chant that is inner woven with my own path with this Totem and Guide. The melody in this version is different, as I have taken my own path of evolution with this song <3

Background:
This song came to me in the Redwoods of California. Like many of my other songs, not recorded here, there are hints of other languages and traditions present here. I've been told that this one sounds Lakota. 

Ceremonial Context:
This is my song for invoking the Spirits and Forces that guide me, those Medicines that I have formed relationship with, the Elemental beings that have taught me the ways of the Medicine Path. I traditionally sing this song as a "Calling Song" in Ceremonies, as it calls the Spirits to the Ceremonial space.

Oftentimes, in many types of indigenous ceremony, the ceremony begins with an invocation of the Spirits & Forces to come & join the ceremony. Oftentimes, this is in the form of a song. For many indigenous people, these forces can be anything from Plant Spirits, to the Elemental Spirits, to Ancestors, Spirit Guides, Guardians & Protectors of Land, etc. etc. etc. 

As a ceremonial singer, I feel that these types of songs are extremely important. For a person holding a container for ceremonial participants, calling the guides and spirits that that person has created deep connection with is highly important. This is because the "shaman" or curandera, has spent their lives developing deep relationships to Spirit & the many forms that He/She takes. By calling forth, into the ceremony by name, the Spirit forces that he/she works closely with, the other ceremonial participants may come to know them by their presence there.

Background:
This song came to me while on the Yuba River, Nevada City, CA. I begun bleeding (my moon time), and walked off from the tribe I was living on the river with to offer my first blood to the shore. As I was bleeding, rattle in hand, a song "Que Mujer es Tu?" came to my consciousness. A traditional Temezcal song, it's a song for men asking the woman what kind of woman she is. As the blood came upon the Sand, I began sining "Soy Mujer", acknowledging all of the archetypes inside of me.

Background:
This song is not an original, and I'm not sure who it's by. It was taught to me by my ex-partner and beautiful brother of Medicine. 

Ceremonial Context:
This song has a light and playful flow to it, and I enjoy singing it in ceremony very much, as it reminds me to take the ceremonial path in a light and beautiful way, to dance and be in bliss, not to take things so seriously. I've always found that the beat of this song does indeed call the Faeries to our experience, their lightness and play touching the hearts of people who listen. I've seen this song inspire others to follow along, easing timidness in light of Play :)

Background:
This song was the first song gifted to me, of my own connection to Spirit, upon the Medicine Path. As a result of entering the Ayahuasca Lineage path, I became increasingly curious about Song and this was the first that came to me, that I wrote down, practiced, and sang as a lullaby to Spirit. 

I wrote this song in New Mexico, after a desert rain storm, on a roof, in July of 2014.

Ceremonial Context:
This song, for me, is sang to "call" the awareness of the ceremonial circle to our highest nature: to the grandmothers & grandfathers that watch over us. And, ultimately, the song invites us to realize that we individuals are, in fact, one with the Spirit of All: the Grandmothers, Grandfathers, and all of Creation.

It's nature is "lullaby", and therefore is sung when the ceremonial space is in a deep, inward, and intimate space within itself. It encourages a soothing, nurturing, and somewhat mysterious vibration into the celestial realms.

Background:
This song was taught to me by a dear friend, "Auntie", and Ceremonial Wisdom Keeper. A water pourer in the Inipi lineage, she was a beautiful teacher to me. The Cherokee Water Song was taught to her by a group of Cherokee women while wading in the water. 

This song was the first of many Water songs that have come into my care. To me, it is a song of blessing and gratitude to the Waters of our World. Water is life, and I sing Water Songs to honor Her Spirit, Her gift of Life to us, and for Ceremonial Prayers with Water.

Ceremonial Context:
This song, traditionally Cherokee but also sung in some Dene' & Lakota lineages, is a North American Native Chant.

It is traditionally sung to praise the waters, and carries with it an upbeat vibration that invites others to chant along. Because of it's simplicity it is an excellent ceremonial tool to invoke a group chanting experience. People simply tend to chime in, which allows for the ceremonial container to be fed with EVERYONE's energy, not just one medicine singer.

In the ways that I have heard it sung, in Native Ceremony, it is sung 4 times (4 directions), but may also be sung 5,7, or however many times it feels appropriate for the energy of the ceremony.
