With spellbinding mastery, Joe's graceful movement between records is something that almost has to be witnessed to be believed. Luckily for you, however, we were able to capture that sorcery live as Joe took to the turntables at the Olive Grove. Recorded live at Dimensions 2021, the recording is crammed with hefty electro and house bumpers – another absolute highlight for us at this year's event. Try not to stomp your feet along to this one (it's impossible).

Everything we've heard from the NY-based selector has been banging, so we were gassd when they were keen for the pod. The mix keeps to their standard, just over an hour of left-of-centre club sonics, built expertly. Real nice tackle throughout, big ups to Yumi.

AM: Yo! What you been up to recently? 

You know… I’ve been chilling. Grilling with friends, watching the homies play out, just big group hangs when I’m not working. 

AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it? 

I recorded this mix with a pioneer djm-450, two xdj-700s, and my iPhone using the pioneer djm recorder app to record it. That app rocks. I recorded this at my apartment in ridgewood during the day when I probably should’ve been working. I really love going from 90 down to 160… so many crazy tunes in that area. So I started off with some tracks I knew I wanted to play and then let Jesus take the wheel. 

AM: Tell us a bit about IYDE, you run it with a couple others ye? 

In Your Dirty Ears is a monthly newsletter I do with my close friends and former colleagues Amelia Holt and Sara Casella. We were always sending each other bandcamp links and Amelia had the idea to do a newsletter and we were deep in the pandemic and I was like okay why not. Selfishly It’s been really great because it makes me very regimented about checking the hundreds of bandcamp emails in my inbox. But it’s been really nice to hear that ppl enjoy it. Ultimately if ppl r buying music and supporting artists because they checked out the newsletter I’m happy. 

AM: Whats next for ya this year? 

Looking forward to some fun gigs this summer. this weekend gonna be playing fourth world (a showcase of local nyc djs and live acts) at knockdown center with Amelia and Sasha (deep creep). It’s been really really fun to mix with them. I love them. Also amelia and I are going to be in Europe the last half of august playing some shows. But I’m honestly just super hype to see Aba Shanti-I in London.

AM: Hey hey! What you been up to recently?

Hello! I've recently relocated to a small town in the midlands of Ireland after spending three years in Portugal. Missing my pals back there but have been absolutely loving the cold weather and living outside of the city. Back in a proper routine of working on music for the first time in years, so finally gonna finish some projects I've been working on for a long time. Also spending a lot of time walking and cycling around. I got a new bike that's like a hybrid between a touring bike and bmx last week, it is truly the dream whip!
 
AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it?

It's all over the place in terms of genre and mood, so I suppose the only theme is just that I really like all of the music in it. Unintentionally, about half of the music in it is made by friends actually, I have only copped that now. 

I spent a few days here just going through the stuff people had sent me, my youtube likes, recent Bandcamp purchases, etc, then just started putting it all together in a session, collage-style. I'll start with maybe 100 tracks and whittle it down. I think about fun/interesting transitions more than a linear trajectory. It probably doesn't sound like it to whoever is listening to it but I spend a pretty absurd amount of time arranging these things haha. I can only manage to make one or two per year. It would be amazing if I could apply this level of concentration to working on my own music.

AM: What have you got planned for 2023? 

Frog-wise, I've got an LP nearly done, which will be out on wherethetimegoes at some point next year. I've also got a single coming out on a great label based in NYC in January, but I'm not sure whether I can openly announce it yet. In any case, I'm excited about that. I have a couple of shows in the UK in Spring too.

Apart from that, around this time last year, a group of us who are loosely affiliated with wherethetimegoes got together for a week in Mayo in the West of Ireland and recorded lots of music over the course of a week. Seán Being has spent the year extracting an LP from the sessions and it's gonna be out soon. 

Life-wise I'm going to spend the next few years learning construction and carpentry with the hope that I can partially escape the laptop prison in the future. Dreaming of building a little house or studio somewhere heavenly. Time will tell.

Ruby J's Club Picks Autumn 2023

CCL (@ccl-url) has many tricks and plenty of surprises up their sleeve. London-born, US-bred but now Berlin-based, they are playful in what they play but serious about how they play it, whether that's head spinning 160bpm cut, "cowgirl-breaks or wiggle steppers." The key for this multidisciplinary artist and former New Forms festival curator is to find the similarities and differences between shades of sound and rhythm and exploit them to spellbinding effect. As a producer, they are no different and have always managed to find fresh in-between sounds on labels like Fever AM and Discwoman. 

The singular DJ steps up this week with almost two hours of pure sonic adventure. It's a perfect showcase of how they can soundtrack imaginary worlds from humid future jungles to robot dances in the sky. You'll hear rhythms you could never imagine and contort your body in impossible ways, all while admiring the dexterity of the DJ who has threaded together such a trippy trip.

There are few people who have had as much of an impact on contemporary electronic music as Karin Dreijer, whether with their brother Olof in The Knife or with their solo project, Fever Ray. From massive indie-pop hits to paradigm-shifting dance records, Dreijer's work takes a psychedelic, plasticine approach to synth pop, with their trademark pitch-shifted vocals and psuedo-tropical beats. As Fever Ray, they've tapped into the global club music underground, working with producers like Nídia, Paula Temple, Deena Abdelwahed, Vessel and, on new album Radical Romantics—one of our favourite albums of the year so far at RA, hands down—even Nine Inch Nails.

Other important collaborators in Dreijer's world are Peder Mannerfelt and Pär Grindvik, the Swedish techno producers who have been working with Fever Ray since the first album back in 2009. They co-mixed this RA Podcast. The mix is a survey of Dreijer's favourite dance music, some of which informs their one-of-a-kind sound world as Fever Ray. There's plenty of music from the groundbreaking East African scene centered around Nyege Nyege Tapes, plus DJ Haram, Equinkoxx, Tayhana and more, and even two exclusive, upcoming Fever Ray remixes from Avalon Emerson and Nifra. It's a rare look into the musical tastes of a true visionary.
