"Breathless is a piece written for viola and electronics, exploring the idea of space and the relationship between the two forces. When I started writing I had in mind the performance space of this church building; this large space resonating and supporting the sound of the electronics, contrasted by the single viola. It was this idea that inspired the narrative of the music. In this piece, there is a constant struggle in the relationship between the two forces as one takes over the other as the more dominant part. The viola struggles on throughout the piece, surrounded by the overwhelming power of the electronics creating the feeling of breathlessness associated with claustrophobia. The voice of the viola is ultimately swallowed by the growing waves of sound from the electronics until it is no more, leaving the electronics to have the final word."
