This is my demo for a song about the Jewish anarchist, Sholem Schwarzbard, avenging the murdered Jews of Ukraine by assassinating Petliura in Paris. The highly publicized trial shone light on the persecution of Jews in Eastern Europe and resulted in his release from prison, fined one franc to Petliura's widow. Schwarzbard, a watchmaker by trade and anarchist by conviction who had served in the French Foreign before being wounded and fighting as a revolutionary in Ukraine, would be known as "Ha'nokem", or The Avenger, for his actions that day in Paris. He wrote Yiddish poetry under the name Baal-Khaloymes, or The Dreamer. 

I wrote the tune while fooling around on the classical guitar I recently recovered from the family farm, and wrote the eight verses of lyrics in a single sitting earlier today. I'm thinking of being a bit more intentional about the tempo and beat, and making this work as a tango-style piece.

Since the initial upload, I overlaid a mandolin accompaniment in one take, and uploaded the version with this accompaniment. If you would prefer the file without the mandolin, contact me and I'll send it to you.

12 Days (2) - Winter Wonder

Made this track in the late 80s on DX7, Korg Poly 800, Roland D10 and TR 808 with C64 as sequencer - now rearranged it with Gadget.

Disquiet 0581 - this weeks challenge was to download a rhythmic field recording and make it part of a track or incorporate it somehow.

I loaded the field recording into Ableton and put it into a drum rack. I then took all the bits between the beats (hiss and non rhythmic parts) and started to mess about with these, adding filters and effects and also playing them as drum hits - that is how the track opens. 
I them loaded all these hiss parts into a synth and stretched and played them as keys, creating the additional synth sounds with effects changing the sounds somewhat.  After jamming about for 30 / 40 minutes I hit reccord and laid down a fairly basic arrangement. 
I tweaked this slightly, adding a little more effects until I had a nice short experimental track i'm pretty happy with!

More or less the whole track was made with the source sounds but it's debatable if the original sound is recognisable?  However I took the prompot to "to sample and rework the source material" as a guide! 

Disquiet Junto Project 0581: Helsinki Downspout

The Assignment: Use a rhythmic field recording as the foundation for a new track.

Step 1: This is a shared sample project, one in which all the participants will utilize the same provided recording, about a minute and a half long, as the rhythmic element for their own music. Access the track, originally recorded by Scott Fletcher and used with his permission, here:

Step 2: Listen to the provided track several times. Think about ways to map its content, perhaps making notations about when certain unique, momentary aspects surface.

Step 3: Record an original piece of music for which the provided music is the underlying rhythm. You might take this quite literally, using the source as it is, resulting in a track that is precisely 1:35 long. Alternately, you might elect to sample and rework the source material. If you go the latter route, make certain that the original sound is, at least at some point in the finished track, recognizable.

Step 4: Because this is a Creative Commons resource, be sure to identify Scott Fletcher as the original recorder of the source material, and include a link to the source track. Identify the license as: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0).

Audio Obscura - Helsinki Downpour [disquiet0581]

A walk through my mother's parking garage; a short elevator ride; snippets of a preacher's sermon; radio static; mysterious voices and glorious feedback from an Enner and a PolyD. This and more found its way into my Polyend Tracker and then into Logic with a few feedback loops using a bus trick I learned from Youtube. Hallelujah!

This is much more minimal than my usual output. I’m not very good at technical terms, or explaining, but I set a slow LFO to guide a silence whilst also trying to follow a metronome that was at a slightly different time. As a result I’d trip over myself, and I found it a something meditative experience as I recorded each track to intuit what was going to happen. Repetition without total order. The constant rumble, well, I call that tinnitus. 

It was and is raining heavily outside my window as I recorded and write this, as it has done for the past two months (UK). This is the ideal way to hear it. If there’s no rain where you are, maybe run your shower and listen from the other side of the door.
