GRANULAR SYNTHESIS AND BLACK MIDI ! OH MY! 

SO....this track is an experiment (but very listenable). 

--The first thing you hear is a simple drum beat (it's 4/4 but has a sort of complex math pattern to the repetion.) 

--At 3 seconds, the granular synth starts. It's Travelizer within Reaktor within Cubase. It's a deconstruction of a 60 second BipTunia radio ad. (You can hear the unaltered ad immediately after the very end of the track so you know what I started with.) I play the granular track on a keyboard after assigning ranges from within Travelizer.  

--At 3 minutes, 12 seconds, two things come in together, and continue to the end of the track. One is a whole-tone long tritone bass pedal thing. The other is some continually changing mellow beats in the Reaktor Groovebox called Go Box. I changed parameters in a pleasing way as it played. 

--At 16 minutes and 20 seconds, some black midi piano comes in. Just because. lol. 

--The song proper ends at 25 minutes, 11 seconds. Just after the song is the ad I sampled to granulate in Travelizer. 

NO OTHER SYNTHESIZERS OF ANY KIND WERE USED IN THIS SONG! (RIP Freddie Mercury). 

If you don't know, GRANULAR SYNTHESIS is a fairly new thing in this form. Basically you import audio, and the program chops it up into thousands of tiny samples, called a "cloud." Then rearranges them on the fly from what you play on a keyboard, also dependent on your settings.

Can Grains in a Tornado Go Right Through Ya?

in 1981 when I was 16, my family took me to visit relatives in Portland Oregon. The adults wanted to talk, so gave me a roll of quarters and dropped me off at an arcade with  my 11 year old cousin. He and I had a blast playing games for hours. 

At first I was like "ugh, I have to babysit this kid", but he was pretty cool for 11. He also showed me a game called "Polybius ." It was kind of hidden in the back corner of the place. Easy to overlook if you didn't know where it was. 

Polybius was unlike any other game I'd played. No real strategy, mostly shapes, and no instructions. But was intuitive to play, and was strangely addictive too. 

I didn't have night terrors like some reported, but kept dreaming I was playing the game, on and off for months, well after returning home. 

The main thing I recall is the music. Very advanced for games back then. Also, somewhat atonal. 3 voices too, a piano type sound, something like cellos or tubas (hard to tell with early MIDI) and drums. 

I have an eidetic memory for music, and this is my note-for-note recreation of the music.

My pitch is relative, not perfect, so the notes may be in the wrong key. But the melodies, rhythm and voices are exactly as in the game.

so, this is far from done, but wanted to let Phil hear the in-progress version.

Basically, everything that's going to be on here is on here. 

My approach with this one after that will be like those painters who put on way too much paint, then scrap it off here and there with a pallet knife to show the different wonderful layers.

I've already put on too much paint. Will scrape another day.

I think we should call the next album "Open Knife Night."
