No Direction

Too Much Fun

I'm not quite sure where this one came from! I think it's anti social media, anti mobile phones, anti celebrity culture.  Maybe I'm getting old!  I think it sounds a bit Leonard Cohenish if I had to pigeon hole this one.  I enjoyed the process of recording it, laying down first the piano then the other keyboard 'voices' and finally the vocals.  Not sure if I've got the levels right, but here it is.

TONES OF STEEL

This is the first time I have recorded a duo acoustic instrumental with my old but solid and trustworthy steel string guitar. I bought it from a friend in the eighties. At that time I was really expanding my guitar skills into different musical iterations of the guitar, and specifically American Folk with its fast finger picking styles. Leo Kottke specifically. 

Although, back then, as a teenager, I already knew the instrument from the music of Al Dimeola. The steel string guitar wonderfully brigdes a gap between the nylon string classical or acoustic guitar and the electric guitar, having the longer sustain and ringing tone of the electric with its steel/nickel wound strings but the dynamics and woody sounding acoustic properties of the nylon.

The style here is my blend of fusion, blues , rock, classical and maybe some latin. As usual I center this around some pre-conceived chord progressions, melodies and allow improvisation to explore more tonalities and directions.

This piece was inspired by a short phrase that caught my attention in  Bach's Organ Sonata No.4, played by the prodigiously talented Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson. As is often the case for me, finding the notes in that short phrase started me on a journey, and after a number of miss steps and U-turns I ended up here.

Nappy Chann - My Turn (MIXTAPE VERSION)

As a composer, I am fortunate to have collaborated with incredibly talented artists from SoundCloud. This includes my latest albums, Canciones para Pablo Neruda and Oda a Gabriela Mistral, featuring the truly extraordinary soprano Maribel Villarroel and the masterful arranger and pianist René Calderón. These works are based on poems by Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, with permission granted by the Pablo Neruda Foundation and the Gabriela Mistral Foundation.

Other albums include Entre Júpiter y Marte and Reflections. Entre Júpiter y Marte was performed by the remarkable tenor Ricardo Tamura, accompanied by the accomplished pianist Lucy Arner. These songs were co-written with the acclaimed author Antonio Skármeta, which remains one of my most special and cherished honors. Reflections is a collection of my earlier works, beautifully interpreted by the gifted pianist Javier Gonzales.

These albums are also accompanied by musical scorebooks filled with beautiful artwork created by Chilean, American, and Japanese artists. The books—sharing the same titles as the albums—are available on Amazon. Canciones para Pablo Neruda has been registered with the Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio de Chile.

Another special collaboration among many is with Paul-Maurice Roche, an incredible pianist and composer. Thank you for taking a song to new levels of nuance and emotion.
