The Life & Times of Aphrodite, Queen of Beauty

WHAT IS THE STORY
In ‘The Life & Times of Aphrodite, Queen of Beauty’ we invoked the text-generating capabilities of contemporary AI to reflect on questions of beauty, art and materiality through a series of mythological genealogies, (anti-)humanist reflections and archetypal story-telling. The algorithm used to produce the text relies on a deep learning model called a recurrent neural network (RNN). This model is trained on a large corpus of text, and can generate new text that is similar to the training data - in this case we used Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 aka GTP-3 which is trained on a vast amount of online conversations and millions of digitized books. The model is capable of learning the long-term dependencies in the text, and can generate coherent and realistic outputs. The language model we used is capable of generating long-form text with the assistance of a few user-inputed prompts. Our prompts of 10-15 words set the overall intention of the text, and the algorithm generated the different chapters based on them. We didn’t edit or intervene in any shape or form with the final output. 

In order to transcribe the text into sound we used a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). With a GAN, you have two neural networks: a generator and a discriminator. The generator tries to create fake audio samples that sound realistic, while the discriminator tries to distinguish between real and fake samples. The two networks compete with each other, and as they do, the generator gets better and better at creating fake audio samples. Other audio inputs for this piece also included stock music, T-T-S (Ivy, child), special FX awards, field recordings, 8-bit music, happy hardcore, a song by Dana International, and YouTube extracts.

The resulting audioplay follows goddess Aphrodite through the millennia of her existence providing a philosophical account of the history of aesthetics. While story-driven and highly entertaining the work also explores questions around the nature of art, the concepts in art, and the experience of art. In our story, Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty experiences multiple existential crises as historical definitions of both love and beauty shift and often collapse over time. In her attempt to keep up with times Aphrodite has to re-configure her subjectivity and belief systems, a process of evolutionary adaptations that mirrors the function of artificial intelligence. Both AI and our Aphrodite crave for a totalising comprehension of reality but always fails as we live in a world of absurdity and finitude. Our training data sets are as flawed as the subjects producing them; creativity (and even our understanding of beauty) spring out of unconscious processes in ways that can only be affectively effective when they ambush us. With this work we aspire to understand what the collective unconscious of the algorithmic abyss can teach us about the impossibility (and therefore freedom) of desire.

Kinky Malinki Part 3 - Kinky Uplifting House Music

Kinky malinki was like being a part of a huge family.  Almost everyone who attended had friends who knew a friend, who knew friends, who all came to every party. We never had a fight at our event. The crowd were far too happy and busy dancing for that nonsense. 

The 25th Anniversary has inpsired me. I haven't stopped reminsicing about the amazing times I had with Paul Crane . Jay Friction was the silly name I decided to call myself at Kinky Malinki, and it does feel like something inside of me has just been shaken and stirred like a Martini, and I've just realised he's still there. I did once set the speakers on fire at Pacha. The tunes must have been scorching hot 😂. Or I got too excited with the levels 🤷.

I might even be back on the radio soon (Jay Friction used to have a Kinky Malinki show on House FM back then) 💃🏻🕺🔥.

This mix for me at least, encapsulates the sound of Kinky Malinki (at least from the years I was jointly running it with Paul). It was quality house music, big vocals, euphoric drops, heavenly choruses, beautiful piano keys and a happy, happy vibe.  Back then we were different to most other nights.  It might have been one of the reasons it was such a popular and talked about night. We got Time Out 'club of the week' almost every month. Thanks Dave 👍. I thought we had incredible musicality, but then I am  biased 🙄.

Can I ask my friends, and anyone who has bought a ticket already to share this to friends, and ask them to share it too, to give people who don't really know Kinky Malinki a bit of a little taster of what it's all about musically, and as a vibe ❤️.

That way, we can try to recreate that family feeling we always had, all those years ago. We would love your friends, and their friends to all come. But it will sell out next month as a huge amount of our original crowd are coming ❤️.

It was a popular night with the guys and girls in its heyday, and that was very likely because we played quality feel good house music pretty much all night long, with a disco, piano driven or vocal edge and a good beat 🕺💃🏻🎶❤️

These mixes are nothing more than my interpretation of the music policy from back then, and a mixture of new and old tracks, many that you'll likely hear at the Anniversary Party.

It all started for me at around 13 years old as a secondary school boy, when I became fascinated with Electronic Music. I was a big Depeche Mode, Yazzo and Tears for Fears fan, so I liked modern bands using technology. I used to go to Trax Records in Greek Street with my best pal at the time Charlie,  and we'd spend the day in Soho Record shops, and listen to the music they played. One of the first tracks I bought was the beautiful Balaeric classic, 'Song for Denise' by Piano Fantasia in 86' when I was just 13 years old. From then I was hooked and passionately in love with this new electronic sound with a beat.

I'd scraped money working in the school holidays to buy my 1210's and a vinyl addiction continued.

I got my first DJ residency in 93' at Labrynth,which was all down to my new friend at the time Vinyl Matt (a resident DJ at the club). It was filled to capacity every Friday and Saturday at the infamous Four Aces club (orignally a Reggae venue) in Dalston Lane and ran by the enigmatic Joe Wieczorek & lovely Sue, who I idolised at the time. 

A rave club at heart, however having house music secondary rooms where I played my first sets. I used to also visit all the record stores within the M25 making sure Joe's Labrynth flyers were stocked up. and giving out the free comps he'd give me for store managers and owners, picking up obscure but brilliant music along the way.  I was in heaven during this period of my life!

After finishing at Labrynth, and missing DJ'ing to a crowd badly, I started putting on my own parties in 95'. These were small local nights, hiring restuarants and bars and filling them up with friends and their friends. some of my pas played at various London nights such as Release the Pressure and Just Can't Get Enough. I also managed to get CJ Mackintosh play for me as he was a lifetime friend of a pal of mine ar the time. 

After moving upwards with bigger venues, I took the plunge in 98' and hired a proper club with a bigger capacity, Imperial Gardens, and Kinky Malinki was born. 

I had to lie blatantly to Raymond at Imperial to even hire the club as I had no big venue history at all.  These were the days before social media existed.  It was sacks and sacks of letters getting franked at the post office and lots of weekends without much sleep giving out the 60,000 flyers we'd had printed.

Together with co-promoter Paul, we put on nights at Imperial Gardens., The Glasshouse, Aquarium, The Ministry of Sound, The Cross, Turnmills, El Divino and my favourite parties at our monthly residency at Pacha London (where we were the longest running residency). 


We were also guests around the UK at some of the most popular nghts of that era, such as Ultra Vegas, Eye Candy, Hotdog and many, many others.

I stepped away from running the parties years ago for personal reasons, but the passion for house music never, ever fades. 

I'm still as in love with the music 35 years later, as I ever have been ❤️ My music? it's underground baby!
