A very Kinky Two Hours...

How manazing that due to the huge success of the 25th Anniversary, we're going to do a Part 2.  That's so incredible.

I can't really put into words how proud I feel of Paul, and the entire team who all pulled together (like in the old days) to make the night so brilliant.  Everyone played a part and I had the best night out in 15 years, and I've been to some big parties over the last few years.

If you came, then you know EXACTLY what to expect, it'll just be a li8ttle bit more of that. 

If you didn't come, then please do check out the videos and speak to friends who did make it.  I think tickets will sell much quicker this time around. 

I'm already excited about another reuinion.  It means a chance to dance again with old friends. old regularls and new friends at March's event.

I started my foray into DJ'ing in 93' at the wonderful Labyrnth, playing early progessive house, so my love and my affection lies with the music that reminds me most of that wonderful era.

This music is deep, sexy, has big breaks, a scattering of vocal, uplifitng melodies, but also has tracks you can get completely lost in, like the early house music managed to do to your mind.

This music reminds me so much of all the house music I've loved since 93'. It especially reminds me of the music I loved to play when I was more involved with Kinky Malinki in my favourite era of 2002 through to 2005/6

'Deep Down and Dirty' - 25 Years of the Kinkiest Uplifting House Music

House Music, it's like having a best friend.  It's there when you need it most.  Once you're in love with it, the love will never completely diminish.  Myself, it's been 37 years since I discovered it and fell completely in love with it.

Despite liking all kinds of music, little else touches my soul the way in which house music does.  It can get you pumped for the gym, or it can help you transport your mind somewhere else when you need to take your mind off a thing. It can make all your hairs stand on end, bring a tear to your eye, or pump your fist.  It can get through lifes hurdles and challenges. It's as if there's a style of house music for every mood you feel or occasion.  

Theres a few different sub genres on this mix.  Some tracks will make you want to dance, and some will take your mind somewhere else.  I've tried to mix genres in a way that I would have back in my favourite era on 92' to 94'.

Since I was 13, I've been absolutely besotted by House music.  I was buying music in my lunch break, when I had saved enough lunch money.  Labrynth was my first regular DJ gig while still in my teens   I ran my own parties soon after, and at 25 I started Kinky Malinki.  For me, it was all about the music.  I can't take credit for Kinky's success, as there were two of us, both young, both passionate and with an unquestionable belief that we would succeed.  We had simlar taste in music, which wad that we both liked good music.and anyway, after I'd left promoting to Paul, he tool it upwards alone. 

Originally we played funky/disco/vocal house in one room, and tougher, deep, progressive house (or the equivalent then of what might be funky tech now) in the the other.  Both rooms were always equally popular.

In fact in the early days, I played in the harder room, likely due to my love of the early progressive house.  I also knew we had residents that played funky house, far, far better than I ever could have.

Whatever people might think of Kinky, we were never a handbag type night. We played a bit of everything, but mainly we played very good house music.

We were picky about our resident DJ's, and all of them were superb at what they did, and many played for KM for many years.  It was veru much a family vibe.

25 years in clubland is an amazing achievment for any night.  Few ever reach to those dizzy numbers.  What Paul has achieved makes me full of pride and admiration.  It was a huge part of my life, and I'm glad I was a part of it.

My life has been pretty much house music, for 37 years now (with a hiatus from DJ'ing).  However the 25th Anniversary Part 1, has made me realise how much I have missed it.  To be part of brining it back (to where I believe it deserves to be) is real bucketlist stuff for me.

Kinky was a music night, first and foremost.  It was about dancing like nobody was watching, and forgetting about life for 8 hours.  It was about smeeting  friends and making new ones, and having the time of your life for one night.  It was about connection, as we all loved good music.  I know several people who met their wives at KM, and I'm so very proud of that.

This mix is the chunkier side of what we did.  Funky and chunky, with those big breaks, and hands in the air moments.  Our crowd was unlike any other.  They danced hard, and the atmosphere was always electric. You might have seen the video with 'Junior Jack' Feel me which was indicative of what happened every month.  The 25th Anniversay simply picked up where it left off.  The atmosphere was truly electric all night long. 

There's much more to come.  There's Iconic Ibiza this year, which will be bigger and better than ever.  The amazing Summer Party at the beautiful Bickley Manor Hotel.  And there's Part 2 of the 25th reunion in November at 93 Feet East, to cap off an amazing year.

Doche Disco Sessions #47 (Michael Gray)

I borrowed the title from a track on the mix.  

But it was so apt, and it perfectly describes what house music can be, and is for me especially.  It is the only music that does what it does to me, which is to take my mind to a totally different dimension. Despite me liking a fairly broad range of music (and being a fairly fanatical Kate Bush fan boy) only William Orbit, Orbital and Leftfield come close to house music in that 'mind to another planet' thing.

This mix is for house heads.  Maybe, original house heads.  People, like me, who like house music that leans towards the vibes of early house music.  I'm not knocking funky house, as I love that too, but deeper stuff is far more orignal and relies much less on samples, or usng other tracks chords and melodies.  It's more original and truer in spirit to the fresh and orignal house music I fell in love with as a school boy many years ago. 

I took a few hours to plan this one.  It took a while as I like to mix in key, and then you'll find exceptions to the rule, or tracks that despite being in key, simply don't work well together, so you try, and try and try again until you find one that fits better. Then I have to make sure I know where I'm mixing in and out, so I mark the tracks with cue points.  For me, mixing two tracks is about the transition.  If you can't hear it or struggle to hear it, it means I've picked the right points. if you can, then I probably should work on it more as it could be better. 

This is music that moves me.  It's deep,  has some vocals, is funky, progressive, house and has some reference in parts to disco music.

It's music that reminds me of my younger self, as a 30 year old DJ and club promoter, who always wanted to try and break new tracks, and introduce new music rather than stick to a formula.  Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't.  But you don't know if you don't try.   Having the Tom Middleton Remix of Kerri Chandlers 'Bar-a-Tym' become a Kinky anthem was pretty special for me.  It's one of my favourite ever house tracks.

Let's not forget we always had a harder room, and the roster of DJ's from the last 25 years shows we were just as tough as we were funky.  Maybe even more so, I haven't counted, but might just do that! 

I was always tougher.  I absoloutely loved breaking a harder edged house track and it becoming a Kinky anthem.  It was a thing that was deeply special to me, with my progressive house background (from 93 onwards).

Remember the date,  30.11.2024.  Part 2.  It's gonna be huge!

In life, I'm not a particularly confident person.  I never have been.  But music brings out the most confident version of me.  I know that I like good music, that is without any doubt in my mind.

I mean, I was 19 years old as an example, playing house in Labrynth, one of Londons biggest clubs, and playing tracks like 'South Street Players', The David Holmes remix of 'Smoke Belch', Transformer 2 'Pacific Symphony, DJ Pierre's remix of Midi Rains 'Shine' and Solitaire Gee 'Slumberland'.  I was passionate about house music even at a relatively young age. 

Move forward a few years and me and Paul started Kinky,  When I met him, I was quietly really impressed by him.  He was much younger, wasn't a DJ, but was packing out Dorringtons (what's now called the 338 Club).  We joined forces together, and it improved us both.  He was the promoter, and I admired that massively.  I was the DJ and music head and had been since my teens.

Now, obviously, I'm going to be biased here, but I thought together we turned Kinky Malinki into something pretty special. 

We were filling up the imperial Gardens within a few months of starting.  Then we moved to The Glasshouse, and we were filling the three rooms there.  Within 6 months, the Ministry were calling us.  Then Keith Reilly Headhunted us, and we had a night at The Cross (and had it filled by 11pm and thousands of people queuing all the way to the start of Goods Yard).  Even though we weren't for them (a bit too South London I think), that got us a 9 year residency at Pacha London every month!

At this time, we were up and down the UK guesting at some of the biggest nights in the UK. Ultra Vegas, for example. 

Because I was a music head and Paul was a promoter, we didn't clash, or fight, or try to get one up on each other.  We just worked brilliantly together as no ego's got in the way.

I think in hindsight, after I had left Paul carried Kinky forward and achieved much more than I ever would have myself, and that's why I respect and admire him. I'm so sure that I'd have never ever made it to 25 years.  His skill as a promoter is legendary, in my opinion.  He managed 4000 people in a night several times! That's pretty special if you ask me.  25 years is unique.  For me, Paul is right up there with the likes of Joe from Labrynth without a doubt. Joe is my club idol, too.

Did I think we played good music? For sure, yes. We had amazing resident DJs.  Everyone wanted to play for Kinky back in those days.  Few did.  And when they were good (which was most of them), they stayed with us. 

Having had a long hiatus from DJ'ing, I never lost the love for the music.  How could I, after 37 years?  But am I pleaded to be back?  Like you wouldn't believe.  Kinky is in my heart. It was a passion. 

This mix is 💯 per cent Kinky Malinki. We were far more diverse musically than most people who didn't come think that we were.  Those who came know only too well that anything went.

Hot House Friction Vol 2

It all started for me at around 13 years old as a secondary school boy, when I became fascinated with Electronic Music. I was a big Depeche Mode, Yazzo and Tears for Fears fan, so I liked modern bands using technology. I used to go to Trax Records in Greek Street with my best pal at the time Charlie,  and we'd spend the day in Soho Record shops, and listen to the music they played. One of the first tracks I bought was the beautiful Balaeric classic, 'Song for Denise' by Piano Fantasia in 86' when I was just 13 years old. From then I was hooked and passionately in love with this new electronic sound with a beat.

I'd scraped money working in the school holidays to buy my 1210's and a vinyl addiction continued.

I got my first DJ residency in 93' at Labrynth,which was all down to my new friend at the time Vinyl Matt (a redident at the club). It was filled to capacity every Friday and Saturday at the infamous Four Aces club (orignally a Reggae venue) in Dalston Lane and ran by the enigmatic Joe Wieczorek & lovely Sue, who I idolised at the time. 

A rave club at heart, however having house music secondary rooms where I played my first sets. I used to also visit all the record stores within the M25 making sure Joe's Labrynth flyers were stocked up. and giving out the free comps he'd give me for store managers and owners, picking up obscure but brilliant music along the way.  I was in heaven during this period of my life!

After finishing at Labrynth, and missing DJ'ing to a crowd badly, I started putting on my own parties in 95'. These were small local nights, hiring restuarants and bars and filling them up with friends and their friends. some of my pas played at various London nights such as Release the Pressure and Just Can't Get Enough. I also managed to get CJ Mackintosh play for me as he was a lifetime friend of a pal of mine ar the time. 

After moving upwards with bigger venues, I took the plunge in 98' and hired a proper club with a bigger capacity, Imperial Gardens, and Kinky Malinki was born. 

I had to lie blatantly to Raymond at Imperial to even hire the club as I had no big venue history at all.  These were the days before social media existed.  It was sacks and sacks of letters getting franked at the post office and lots of weekends without much sleep giving out the 60,000 flyers we'd had printed.

Together with co-promoter Paul, we put on nights at Imperial Gardens., The Glasshouse, Aquarium, The Ministry of Sound, The Cross, Turnmills, El Divino and my favourite parties at our monthly residency at Pacha London (where we were the longest running residency). 

We were also guests around the UK at some of the most popular nights of that era, such as Ultra Vegas, Eye Candy, Hotdog and many, many others.

I stepped away from running the parties years ago for personal reasons, but the passion for house music never, ever fades. 

I'm still as in love with the music 35 years later, as I ever have been ❤️
