Where Were You Then?

Soon after shelter-in-place orders were given throughout North America, I started experimenting with compositional approaches that would allow fellow recorder players to continue to enjoy a sense of camaraderie by playing with their friends, while staying safely at home. Unfortunately, the current limitations of our technology made this a rather Sisyphean challenge (ask my friends about my Zoomnopédie No. 1).
But then I took a wonderful Amherst online class on the Canonic Duets of Telemann, and I said “That’s It!” The Canonic Duet is a form that allows for anywhere from 2 to 20 people to all learn the same thing, and then play it as a duet with someone, without having to deal with audio latency issues. 
That said, there is an important technical caveat: When playing a duet via an online platform (such as Zoom), the person wishing to hear both parts must (counterintuitively) mute themselves. The other person will then hear only themselves playing. In a Canonic Duet, this person (the unmuted one) must also be the one who starts first. Then you can trade places, so both people can have the “duet experience.” While this works well for 2 people, it also works quite well for a leader with a virtual class of many.
My Canonic Duet No. 1 is the first of a triptych, the entirety of which will be available in the coming months. I have created versions of it for both tenor and alto recorders, so you can play it on your favorite instrument.
