For its first edition, NICOLETTI AUDIO presents 'Blush Response', a 15 minutes soundtrack by London-based, South African artist Mary Hurrell (b. 1982).

Originally made as a soundtrack to an exhibition, the work is composed of electronic vocal fragments, synthesized waves and text stemming from Hurrell’s research into Jacob Epstein’s tomb for Oscar Wilde at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Made in 1914 and inspired by Wilde’s poem ‘The Sphinx’, the tomb has evoked a tradition whereby visitors kiss the statue after applying lipstick to their mouth, leaving a ‘print’ of the kiss on the stone. In 2011, however, a glass barrier was erected around it to make the monument ‘kiss-proof’. 

'Blush Response' excavates ideas around touch, absence, memorialized and replicant bodies in a poetic meditation on multiplicities found within feminine symbols and representations of love, sensuality and desire. Featuring an automated voice reading a text evoking the different colours that could be left by lipstick on various surfaces – e.g. ‘cake, flame, grenadine, rococo’ – Blush Response explores perceptual synaesthesia between hearing, touching, and moving through imagined and digital tomb-like spaces that oscillate between stasis and transformation. 

Blush Response is the first work produced by Hurrell as part of an eponymous live performance and exhibition curated by NıCOLETTı at Exo Exo, Paris, with the generous support of Fluxus Art Projects and the French Institute in London.

MBE Series founder Giovanni Napolano continues his research of the Mediterranean, offering up his own personal Porta Del Mediterraneo.

Unfolding along two sprawling 15 min sides, Napolano stitches threads of chopped & screwed folksong with a discrete dub strategy, seamlessly leading the mind down labyrinthine ginnels of his imagination in a sort of uchronic regression session where the ghosts of the past inform the present. In the process it humbly speaks to Naples’ position at the frontier of the current migrant crisis, and necessarily takes a standpoint against Italy’s resurgent, nationalist fascism, revealing the beauty and energy of its indigenous mixture of peoples, rather than erecting borders between them. 

Taking his native Naples as a locus of Mediteranean culture, Napolano plunges the port city’s palimpsest of energies embedded by successive waves of Greek, Northern African & Eastern migration to discover an underlying, rhizomic connection and commonality linked by dub and hip hop as a contemporary iteration of folk music. 

Under its titular, mythical metaphor for the fall of Babylon, and usage in Rastafari culture, ‘Le Macerie Di Babilonia’ imaginatively examines a sense of self via a historic lens, drawing on Napolano’s upbringing in the chaotic port city and his autodidactic research into the rich mosaic of Napolitan heritage, to model how a folk class solidarity and shared character, with its own rules and rituals, has emerged from its syncretic milieu. 

Variously a treatise on provenance; an impressionistic tale of the European north meets a global south; a dub-abstracted, allegoric, ethnomusicological collage; ‘Le Macerie Di Babilonia’ is a fascinating and immersive listen that presents its maker’s dilated world view at its most mesmerising.

Paralaxe Editions is based in Barcelona, and Ylia (a.k.a. Susana Hernández) has long been one of the city's most well-regarded musicians. A classically trained pianist who came of age DJing breakbeat raves in Andalucia, she easily maneuvers between disparate scenes and styles; she's as comfortable dropping electro and techno records as she is performing alongside experimental flamenco artist Niño de Elche (she's a member of his touring band).

Following her appearances on labels such as Lapsus and Hivern Discs, Dulce Rendición is Ylia's first full-length effort, a cinematic collection of meditative and richly melodic tracks that largely grew out of her intimate live sets. Weaving together analog synths, field recordings and fragments of her own voice, much of the music was directly inspired by her dreams—and more specifically, the seemingly impossible sights and sounds that populated them. Working to recreate their lingering silhouettes in the light of day, Ylia oscillated between moments of deep introspection and playful fantasy as she settled into the hazy space between sleep and consciousness.

Other Joe’s ‘Jealousy Tulip’ arrives in stasis - as if suspended in mid-air. No longer rising but not yet falling.

After contributing a piece to our Stay In Bed Vol. II compilation we proudly present the latest EP from the .jpeg Artefacts label head, a hazy five tracker built on swirling loops, murky textures and playful motifs.   Joe’s EP is comprised of loops made in a single day and ruminated over long walks. Large project files and overloaded effect racks caused the renders of each file to take on a slightly different flavour each time they were exported. We’ve dubbed this precarious workflow “CPU Jazz”.

Within these uneasy and at times disconcerting sonic textures there are hopeful melodies and rhythms that cut through the fog, suggesting an idyllic spring that is just out of reach. Let your ear hold onto these moments and use them as a key to open you up to the meditative garden of the Jealousy Tulip.
