VLV006 - VA "CYBORGS AROUND ME" (Versions and reshapes) 2020

Marco Shuttle's third album, Cobalt Desert Oasis, features a varied collection of music recorded across a two year period. Often traveling to remote destinations, Marco would come back to Berlin with field recordings, images, and other inspirations to process in his studio and turn into sound.

The theme of the journey turns into a something more abstract than a travel diary, where environmental sounds blend in with modular synthesis, drum machines, effects and analog oscillators resulting in a cinematic listening experience where psychedelia, ritualism, and mysticism weave together in a sort of alien soundscape - that as the title of the album suggests, is reminiscent of a parallel utopian world.

The album is rich in complex rhythmics, and more than in any of his previous work, has strong acoustic elements. Amongst other percussion instruments, Marco used the Tombak, a traditional Persian hand drum capable of reaching a very wide range of frequencies - from deep round subby toms, to high pitched sharp rimshots, throughout the record.

Marco Shuttle is certainly not new to these sort of elements, but in Cobalt Desert Oasis he brings the environmental element of his sound into the forefront in a way that takes the listener into a hazy expanse where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the machine elements from the natural - and where the music almost becomes a visual experience, which relates to Marco's own photography used throughout the cover and insert images.

"I feel that this set is a good representation of the tunes I like to rep, with a contrast of moods and dynamic style of mixing. The first 10-15 min section is quite memorable for me, as I was really enjoying the energy the tunes were bringing out of each other. The third tune, which is from Florentino, is quite an upfront percussive banger, but when it comes in from the DJ Boss tune it’s just got a straight-up sexy quality, haha. Then the Youngsta tune after it just amplifies the hype. Plus: I got to give a shout to re:ni as I got very, very hyped playing one of her new bits! The Sputnik One bit sounding bloody epic too, and I played 3 tunes from Amor Satyr/Siu Mata – so I got to give him a special mention too!"

the significant novelty of kyoka‘s first full length album »is (Is Superpowered)« is that she uses her own voice much more often than usual, in the form of short snippets as well as longer sung melodies. these elements are set and arranged as if they were an autonomous instrument. sometimes these voices give the impression of being a babelesque language mix-up, or even a kind of cryptic message for the listener like found in the song »meander«.

the production process of the record was heavily supported by her label mates frank bretscheider and robert lippok, which is, in this way of forming a production team, a unique constellation in the history of raster-noton. whereas lippok focused on preserving the roughness and complexity of kyoka‘s compositions, bretschneider concentrated on refining them regarding their fluidity and focus. both tried to keep the vitality and hyperactivity of the initial tracks without losing their distinctive eccentricity.

although kyoka‘s sound is often kind of chaotic, it is by no means stressful but rather energizing and easy to enjoy. the only exception to this can be found in »piezo version vision«, the noticeably roughest track of the record. her particularly progressive style is best reflected by the song »re-pulsion«, a rolling groove combined with unusual clicks and snares and topped with crazy sounding voice fragments.

the album thus further deepens what was already initiated with her first ep »iSH«, released as part five of raster-noton‘s unun series. it presents a stylistically broader spectrum of kyoka‘s music but at the same time exhibits the fresh and positive, sometimes even childlike attitude she is already known for. this eventually renders »is (Is Superpowered)« a perfect extension of our label catalogue.

Dandy Jack, is renowned Worldwide as much for for his musical productions than for his organization work in the electronic movement since 1989. He is one of the most talented music mechanics between Berlin and santiago de Chile. He is always changing his place of residence, which results in a systematic negation of conventional physics and valid national foundations following Subrosa Elektropunk and the reclamation of the intercontinental Zone Industriel in the 80s, Dandy Jack together with his World Citizen colleagues, Atom Heart designed Particle-House structures under the project Gon. The 90s were characterized by the diversity of global and microelectronic excursions. He was also a sound design consultant for Marcely Antunez’s (La Fura Dels Baus) digital-mechanical performance, ”Epizoo” which premiered in Florence, Italy.
In 1997 he founded the label Ruta 5. Ruta 5 is a label specialized in electronic music and born in less highlighted countries than Germany and USA.
As a musician he released many individual projects such as Dandy Jack and the Cosmic Trousers in 1997, Dandy Jack and the Plastic Women in 1998 - both for the label Rather Interesting - or Dandy Jack and the Latin Lava in 2001 and Dandy Jack and the junction SM 2004 both on Perlon.
Many of his projects intensify the link between electronic music and Latin sounds and rhythms. On the other hand, Dandy Jack has developed a wide range of musical styles until today, which is the proof of his genius understanding of music and of his passion for electronic sounds.
This unique vision of multiplicity of sounds and bounding took him to develop many different projects with other a range of amazing artists, such as:

The most recent and amazing news is that Dandy Jack just joined Luciano and the Vagabundos for a collaboration, from which magical new sound is expected for the summer session 2012 in Ibiza.
