We wrote this track for Okeechobee's DJ/song submission contest and this was actually our first release produced out of Ableton, after working in Logic Pro for about 5 years.  Let me tell you - switching DAWs was a breath of fresh air.  Sound design in Live is a million times easier for bass music than Logic, and we've been having a blast using it.  

Our favorite standout part of this track is definitely the drums.  We loveeee using bucket snares in our production - the raw clang of the snare resonance just adds this energy to a track that makes us want to headbang.  The snare started off as a Virtual Riot acoustic snare sample.  We wanted to add a lot more punch to the sample, so rather than compression/clipping the acoustic snare itself, we clipped the transient out of a synth snare and layered it with a click sample, then clipped the layers into oblivion until it was snappy and punchy.  We layered the transient result onto the acoustic snare and added some light compression to make them blend for the result you hear now.  The kick is one of our kicks from our library.  The rattle percussion is a one shot we pulled out a loop then varied the groove and velocity on to give the vibe that it has.  

The basses here were the fun part.  The choppy basses you hear in the first verse is actually the result of resampling and combining some of Chime's bass samples.  To give it the feeling of growing and emerging out of nowhere, each resample was more and more distorted with less filtering.  We chopped up the final result in the arrangement view in Live after bouncing to audio and introduced repeats and rolls to add more energy and emotion.  The growl bass on the verse is one of our favorite Serum patches with some very simple post processing - a little bit of EQ to make it fit, some clipping to control the dynamic range, and some very soft low pass filtering on the high end to control the harshness.  One of our favorite tools for this is Sonimus' Britson Console emulation.  The Britson console is very simple and has nothing but a gain fader, a low pass filter, and a high pass filter, but the filters on this emulation are literally smooth and subtle as butter.  It's very easy to low pass down to 2k on this thing and still maintain a lot of high end presence - that is how subtle this filter is, so it's great for making micro-adjustments to how much high end presence a sound has.  The final drop bass is a patch we built with 4 or 5 different layers - a sub, a straight up the middle mid-bass saw path, a distorted buzz layer that we ran through 4 or 5 different instances of OTT at low depth values (multiple OTTs in a row is fabulous for sound design because it introduces weird phase variances in the signal that compound and change the tone), and finally a high mids layer that opens up at various parts of the bass to give some vocal inflection and emotion.  

We had a great fucking time making this track and being able to explore some of the more experimental sounds in bass music.  We hope you enjoy <3
