this is funny. Mosquitoes are really a national heritage of Sweden. No Swedish summer would be complete without them LOL

I have spent four years trying to find where the Eagle Owls nest without success. Last night I put out a drop rig in a nearby place and it seems as this area requires a closer look in the near future. I do not give up! The male calls all by himself around 3 AM but around 4 AM the dawn chorus starts with Song Thrushes, Linnet, Wrynecks among others. Uppsala, May 5, 2023.

The third year in a row a pair of Blyth's Reed Warblers will nest at Salsta Castle, just north of Uppsala. Always a pleasure to record with all its imitations. At least 15 species are discernible in this recording: Chaffinch, House Martin, White Wagtail, Linnet, Common Swift, Goldfinch, Bluethroat, Blackbird, Yellow Wagtail, Blue Tit, Redstart, Fieldfare, Barn Swallow, Wheatear and Redwing. From dusk to dawn with two pairs of cranes and one or two single male contenders. In this recording you will hear almost infrasound (80-200 Hz) growls and heavy panting as the males chase each other in the wetland and of course the trumpeting of cranes through the night. An amazing experience to be this close. Huddunge, Uppsala. April 9, 2024.

Cranes like you never heard them before!

This is quite a rare recording where the infrasound of the lekking male capercaillie is clearly audible. This infrasound is thought to be an indication of male quality and the two bands of 35 Hz and 55 Hz probably travel much longer in the forest than the rest of lek. When males utter their infrasounds just after the "plop" they go temporarily blind so it must be quite exhausting to produce. The males go directly under my microphone and the "crisp" sounds are from dry reindeer moss.

Perhaps a galloping horse is not the best metaphor. Slightly better the ultrasound of baby heartbeats. Regardless nobody knows for sure whether the call is produced vocally or mechanically. Common Snipe produce their bleating vocalisations as air rushes past their outer tail feathers but Jack Snipes are reported to occasionally produce the galloping call from the ground, so perhaps vocally? Extremely difficult to make field recordings of. Unlike the Common Snipe displaying constantly, the Jack Snipe only made two calls during two hours and it is oh so quiet.
