Arad, real name Dara Smith, first joined the VOITAX catalogue in June 2020. Back then, the Irish artist served us up with »Radiance Haze« - a 6-track EP, spanning from heavy-hitting breaks to the ethereal ambience, with heavy features of Smith’s vocals. Known for his multidisciplinary vision on music, he has also previously made seminal moves with his work as one half of Lakker, alongside Eomac, dropping groundbreaking music on heavyweight labels such as R&S, Blueprint and Stroboscopic Artefacts.

For his second EP on VOITAX, Smith now returns with five beautifully crafted tracks that he titles »Augmented Fantasy«. While following a similar approach, he does not fail to expand his repertoire of celestial dream-like atmospheres, which he carefully surrounds with a whole variety of vocals, and accurately placed broken drum patterns. In addition to his own singing, Arad also presents two impressive collaboration tracks, in which one of them features the voice of Stine Omar, also widely known as one half the Berlin-based pop duo EASTER. Driving rhythmics and processed, grainy vocals turn this piece into guaranteed hit material. Another collaboration with the befriended vocalist and music producer Nina Hynes serves as a touching closing chapter for this brilliantly produced, eclectic 5-tracker. All pieces are perfectly glued together while keeping their very individual character and soundscapes. The listener is certainly left with an augmented fantasy, as well as a curiosity to hear more to come from the Irish talent.

Recent discourse on the subject of women and electronic music falls tendentially into two categories; either writing forgotten histories of pioneering work of women such as Daphne Oram, Elaine Radigue, Delia Derbyshire, Pauline Oliveros, Maryanne Amacher amongst many others, or with reference to the recent statistics via female:pressure, highlight the huge quantitative discrepancies between male and female musicians, DJs and producers represented at labels and music festivals worldwide. Whilst both can be considered worthwhile approaches in their own right, the former approach risks creating fetishized figures of "patchbay nuns" (Abi Bliss) and the latter finds hostile responses and risks ostracization in its own field. In both, one fundamentally important aspect remains overlooked - Judith Butler formulated this as the necessity not only to inquire how the category of “women” might become more fully represented - for example here in music -, but also crucially to understand and critique the very categories and structures of power in which these discourses operate.

Taking root from an abstract ontological level, in which binary categories of sex and gender have long been refuted (biologically as well as culturally), the panel aims to assess the interactions between sound, gender and technology from various philosophical and artistic positions. The widely discussed "cyberfeminism" borne in the early 1990s questioned the perpetuation of technology as a male-dominated domain, whilst also inciting digital culture as an ideal flourishing ground for subversive strategies. Though the relationship of this purported digital utopia never largely or explicitly addressed sound, it shares dimensions in its affective power as well as non-linear, decentralized and unhierarchical characteristics. 

After approximately two decades since cyberfeminism boomed - how can we assess the cyberfeminist dream of the subversive potentialities within technology in the current status quo? How does an inquiry into the nature of sound tally to the broader aims of cyberfeminism? Does a gendered understanding of technology and sound technologies help the dismantling of the structures which form sound, gender and technology today, or does it perpetuate these? Referring to both levels of feminist activism and feminist theory outlined above, as well as the dual tendencies within cybernetics towards order and chaos at the core of cyberfeminism – what can be identified as continuity and discontinuity in the structures of sound, gender and technology?

In the 2010 book Program or Be Programmed, media theorist Douglas Rushkoff highlights the need for the individual to learn how to code. The "new literacy of the digital age", coding enables "access to the control panel of civilisation", without which the individual becomes a passive bystander in a society and culture shaped by a small privileged few. 

This imbalance of control, and dis-heartening societal passivity in the face of systemic global crises, seems to only deepen over time. Yet as a composer and one of the directors of spatial sound collective 4DSOUND, John Connell argues that learning to listen- cultivating our capacity to detect and respond to signals in our physical and digital spaces – is as important for shaping our future as any line of code. Both physical and psychological practice, listening as a discipline allows us to tune into a sensitivity rarely afforded in the bustle of our daily lives, and the stupefying noise of our socialised (and programmed) mediascapes. 

The talk reflected on the potential of working with listening practices and sound technologies to encourage new – or, perhaps a return to older – states of awareness and reciprocity that can guide us towards more compassionately informed action and sustainable design.

CTM 2018: Silence Signal Noise

TRINITITE 2018 '20 deals with Belgian post war history, with sound and image concerning awakening, emancipation, halt and decay.
The film is set up as a pseudo didactic alternative school lecture dealing with obscure details in our national history.
The film reflects upon the coming of age of a country in sync with our own coming of age in the backdrop of the Cold War era. 
The footage stems from national television reportages dealing with public interviews questioning class and gender at school, at work and in the private atmosphere, in the late sixties, early seventies. The national archive is rearranged and looked at from a contemporary point of view.
