This composition comes from a childhood memory. At my parents' house we had a porch and I remember very well that when it rained, the roof of this porch greatly amplified the sound of the drops hitting it. In the silence of the house, it was possible to notice the beginning of a storm, when few drops fell on the roof of the porch, then becoming more and more, until it turned into a roaring noise.

Cette phrase de Don Fernand qui ouvre la scène VI de l’acte II tisse la trame de cette œuvre pour flûte solo.
Reprenant le principe du vers alexandrin, l’interprète développe divers modèles répétitifs et récursifs qui interrompent inopinément sa forme constante.
Ces modèles, caractérisés par une rythmicité idiomatique, renforcent une structure mécanique qui se rétrécit progressivement.
Toute la pièce serpente autour de cette idée maîtresse et le geste instrumental est progressivement lié à la parole humaine.

REIN (Rhaeto-Romanic for the river Rhine) speaks of severe challenges threatening the Rhine and other rivers due to climate change and drought. Rivers are vital arteries, and this music reflects on their life-sustaining essence, and the environmental precariousness of the world, we currently live in.

REIN has been commissioned by ZeitRäume Basel for the Basel Sinfonietta.
