RIP Charlie Daniels. I had been working on this cover off and on for the past few weeks, before learning that he has passed away today. CDB was one of my departed wife's favorite bands growing up and so I learned this song to play at her celebration of life last year. It's pretty stripped down compared to the original, and so I hope it does it justice.

My buddy Mike loves this song and he did the six string guitar tracks. I thought it sounded great and wanted to throw some bass on it and try to sing pretty like Greg Lake. Well I can't, so I just sang it as best I could.

Trilogy

From The Beginning

I added a picture of Queen, but this song is all Roger Taylor. I can't sing as high as Roger, so it's tuned down a few steps from the recording, which made it hard to get the "Hey you" guitar riff sounding right, but well, you work with what you have.  The hardest (worst?) part was the vocal harmonies. I think they are where this band clearly separates from nearly everybody else in rock. I realized about 10 seconds into mixing them that I had no idea what I was doing. I still don't. And why the hell can't I sing an "ooooh?" Oh well, it's time to move on. Rock out!

News of the World

Fight From the Inside

I had kind of forgotten about this song. But a couple of months back I was on vacation and I heard it at least three times in random situations, including once when a guy played it live while we were sitting on a restaurant patio. I have some pretty specific childhood memories associated with this song. They are quite happy and pleasant in contrast to the story that is told in the lyrics. When we heard it that first time, we all got quiet and thoughtful about what we were doing, which doesn't happen often with 17 year old boys. 

Anyway, I noticed it was a pretty easy song to play so I decided to cover it.

Today makes 45 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. I hope that the crew will rest in peace.
