Bitter Roots is a song about experiencing a healing, healthy kind of love after having been in what some refer to as “toxic” or unhealthy relationships. 
I wasn’t sure how to describe the feeling I was having when I first met my wife. It was like I was waiting for the snap; expecting a negative emotional twining that never came. It felt empty at first, as though something were missing. Then it hit me: what I was feeling was peace. Negative emotion didn’t need to be the electricity that tied us together. That feeling came from a kind of selfish dependency that I had to unlearn. Bitter Roots is a love song for my wife as much as it is a reflection on my own negative relationship experiences of the past.
