GRIZZLE

My Dad died in 2004, I was 15 years old,
His death was certainly not foretold.

No warning, no illness, no malady or feeling weak,
He had a massive heart attack in his sleep.

And I awoke to screaming from my Mum,
And I wasn’t prepared for what was to come.

There he was, my father, ‘Grizzle’,
No longer living but the tears didn’t drizzle.

They wouldn’t come, I had to be strong,
For now it was just my Mother and Brother where I belong.

Grizzle was a mathematician, a teacher, a dad,
A husband, a friend, he made so many glad.

Not through being an extrovert, he liked his peace and space,
And I would do anything to feel one last embrace. 

Decaf’s Dad-Shaped-Hole effects me everyday,
If you were here Grizzle, what would I say?

“I love you, I love you, I love you,” what other words are needed?
In your absence, your little boy has receded.

It wasn’t always like this, and there’s hope for change,
I’m working at it, little by little at this stage.
