We have now arrived to the third chapter in our successful downbeat and chill-out series.
Eleven exquisite tunes selected by swedish electronic music composer Magnus Birgersson, more known as Solar Fields. His first album 'Reflective Frequencies' was released 2001 on french label Ultimae. Today Magnus has released five full length albums and is a well established name in the ambient music scene.

First out is James Murray from London, UK with 'Last man in the World'. James is working as a freelance composer, producer and sound designer and is currently finishing his debut album which will be released on Ultimae. Second is newcomer Amos from Upplands Vaesby near Stockholm Sweden, presenting his jazzy ambient track 'Street Lights'. Swedish producer I Awake is next with his wonderful 'Life Cipher', followed by Gothenburg duo Carbon Based Lifeforms 'Endospore', a dreamlike, euphoric track.

Tune number five is no other than Solar Fields himself giving us 'Feelings', a extraordinary piece of music craftmanship. Next up is Vibrasphere, here teamed up with american singer Irina Mikhailova. Their track 'Meander' is a true masterpiece of chilled music.

Continuing the musical journey, norway producer Xerxes gives us his 'Early Morning Crystals', a more groovy, hypnotic number straight from the norwegian fiords. The following tune is from Dennis Tapper, more known as Hux Flux. Together with former Ibojima-member Magnus Holte they have formed the project Illuminus. Here they present their psychedelic dub soundscape 'Dem Cowboys'.

Chromosome continues the psychedelic surges with the melodic 'Evens Heaven', followed by the trance veteran Blue Planet Corporation with his magnificent, funky 'A Foret(e)st Of Paradise'. Closing the collection is no other than Robert Elster from Vibrasphere and technoproducer Martin Skogehall as the duo Kritical Audio. 'Yellow Blend' is a brilliant, rythmic piece with a catchy 303 bassline.

Following on from his Anjunadeep Explorations debut last summer, emerging German DJ/producer Ben Böhmer returns to the label for his first solo outing with a trio of melodic weapons on ‘Morning Falls EP’. The EP opens with the rolling melodies of ‘Morning Falls’ before drifting into peak time club cut ‘After Earth’. Böhmer rounds off the EP with the laid back grooves of ‘Velvet Rebellion’ which also features his friend and frequent collaborator Wood.

I've been so excited to share the story behind these two tracks. Please read on..

It all started last year when I noticed an email from The New York Times in my inbox - an invitation from Pulitzer Prize-Winner, Ian Urbina, to join a first-of-its-kind initiative - to combine investigative journalism and music in an effort to raise awareness about current events.

Ian wrote that he believed that musicians are master story-tellers - that he was looking to team up with an artist who could use their musical abilities to convey the emotions behind his reporting. He thought I might be a good fit for the project - to use his writing as emotional fuel, and audio samples from the video footage to tell the story in my own way through music.

So, what's the story?

Get this - right now, there are pirate ships in international waters - on which some of the most disturbing and vile crimes against human rights and the environment are going largely unnoticed and unpunished. Too big to police, and under no clear international authority, the world's oceans have become a lawless hellscape where slavery, sex trafficking, and murder are commonplace.

Needless to say, I was hooked - I spent hours reading Ian's book, feeling sick to my stomach as I went through the video footage. I couldn't believe all of this was happening and there is almost nothing being done to stop it. It just pulled me in - next thing I know, I'm ripping audio samples from the footage and scribbling down ideas, fully committed to doing my part to spread awareness about these atrocities.

What really struck me was finding out about the stowaways. That's right - there are people hiding on these doom-spreading death-vessels by choice. I found myself completely immersed in one particular interview with a stowaway who had lottery tickets hanging from the top of his crawl space. He explained that, for him, sneaking onto the ship was his passage to a better life somewhere new.

Imagine that - life was so unbearable where you lived that you decided to sneak on to one of these notoriously dangerous boats in the hopes you might make it ashore someplace new with better opportunities - but weeks later, you find yourself still hiding in your tiny crawl space with little to eat or drink. You often wake to gunshots or the sounds of men fighting and yelling.

Some of the other stowaways have turned themselves in, only to be forced into slavery on the ship. Others have tried to escape by jumping overboard - only to be used as shooting practice for the guards - or worse, to be left alone to die in a vast and unforgiving sea.

Yet even amidst all of this death and despair, somehow, you still have hope - your lottery ticket hanging above you as a reminder that miracles can still happen.

That's where I wanted to take you with the music for this EP. I wanted to paint a picture of what it would sound and feel like to be hiding onboard one of the most disturbing places on earth. I wanted you to feel the unease hanging in the air around you, hear the groaning of the ship, the waves crashing into metal - and once you're there in the middle of it all - to instill a comforting sense of hope.

I'm really proud of these 2 tracks - I used this as an opportunity to step out of my musical comfort zone and test my own boundaries with new rhythms and sounds. I hope you can hear and feel what I was trying to do with these.
