78rpm Disc 161: Seamus Ennis:  Miss Monaghan/The Merry Blacksmith (reels)

We're back after a bit of a holiday with a 78rpm disc from Seamus Ennis. On the heels of Na Píobairí Uilleann's release of Taisce Luachmhar (Valuable Treasure) – The Piping Album, this set of reels is another that was recorded for Bill Stapleton's Irish Recording Company and made their way to the States on this Presto instantaneous disc. The catalog number (1021-B) is consistent with Stapleton's other numbers during that time.

Been learning this jig in Dm. Recorded on the Zoom which I'm also just figuring out. I love this tune as I do most Dm tunes. I heard someone play it on the bouzouki and fell in love straight away.

The Trip To Galway (Jig)

Recording of myself playing the flute years ago. The second tune comes from the solo album of Galway-born flute player John Creaven, who was educated in Belfast. That's probably where he picked up the tune. Mick O'Brien & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, and Dervish recorded it in different keys.

This week's track comes from the McCusker Brothers Ceilidhe Band from Kilcreevy, Co. Armagh. The band dates back to the 1930s. This was recorded in 1954 and released on the HIs Master's Voice label (HMV BD.1324).

One of my own compositions.  Dedicated to the memory of my friend Joe Crilly.  One of the most acclaimed of the plays which he wrote during his career was one called "On McQuillan's Hill".  Hence the title of this barndance.
