The first modern case of this kind to cause a sensation involved U.S. couple Betty and Barney Hill, who claimed to have sighted a UFO in 1961. After Betty suffered for months from nightmares concerning being in a laboratory equipped with unknown instruments, she and her husband were treated by hypnosis, with Barney Hill then describing similar experiences to his wife. Travis Walton had a similar experience in the 1970s. The phenomenon also became known to a wider circle through the writer Whitley Strieber, who had some personal experiences from 1985 examined in hypnosis sessions and presented them in his 1987 book Communion. However, Strieber does not insist on an extraterrestrial origin of the experience, but considers in detail the possibilities of the unconscious. The content of the book was filmed in 1989 under the same title as a feature film starring Christopher Walken.

It is difficult to obtain reliable figures on how many people claim to have been abducted by aliens and subjected to various medical experiments in their spaceships. In 1992, the American polling institute Roper published a survey according to which 3.7 million U.S. Americans had experiences that indicated abduction. The validity of this survey and its results has been challenged several times. A re-survey by Roper in 2002 found that 1.4% of the U.S. population recalled four out of five key abduction experiences.

A 1988 study at the University of New Mexico found that about 20% of volunteers injected with a high dose of dimethyltryptamine had identical experiences to that of an alien abduction......
