Backed by haunting acoustic guitar, heartbeat percussion, and sacred organ drones, the song moves from whispered vulnerability to crowd-stirring wails, with claps, cheers, and ghostly gospel harmonies echoing like a midnight revival. It was written years ago, when life was taking a huge turn. I have had like 17 huge turns since, and in retrospect, my life was really not falling apart, but it was that emotion that drove this into being. Came together really fast, as the good ones do.,. I think I was listening to something on The Stones' Exile On Main Street at the time, and maybe in the back of my mind I had the Eagles' "New Kid in Town", or something... Anyway, I had a lot of visions of this ending up some overproduced thing like Jim Steinman or Mutt Lang kind of ordeal, but opted for the raw piece of meat on the paper plate I present you with here. Long live meat. And paper plates. And melancholy songs that try to suck you into the past rather than getting a life now. You're welcome.
