Mesh Series 016: Kinn

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

The mix extracts highlights from Kinn's debut album, Anamnesis Landscape, and expands on his favoured themes and aesthetics of the macabre, presented at times with a tongue in cheek “Dread turned up all the way to 11” fashion.

Using extracts of dialogue, these fragmented conversations evoke a subjective narrative, each monologue lingers in the imagination of the listener as they are juxtaposed or mirrored by the brooding drones and fleeting moments of respite. Thanks again to Kinn for contributing to this months series.

"Jack Aldridge (who took the photo) is one of my oldest friends, someone I haven’t seen in person in a very long time due to the pandemic. For this reason I asked him to work with me on “something” around the same time this mix for Mesh came about Whilst I was putting the final touches to the mix I asked him to send over a few photos, without any context, I was just interested to catch up with what he was working on, out of the few dozen photos he sent I became transfixed on this image, the content has no immediate grand concept and yet it’s ambiguity had possessed me. Listening through the finished mix now, the sound and the image have become one, the narrative they evoke together
is expansive and personable, I would hope this is an expectation of listeners of my chin-stroke-type-beat music anyway, to sit and stare into space and let their mind wander, perhaps to places they wouldn’t normally be comfortable to explore" - Kinn

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, and what they listen to.

No holding back, Jinjé (Lee Malcom) throws down some dance-floor calefaction on this edition 18 of the Mesh Mix Series. It covers sonic sketches across the electronic spectrum to IDM, garage, glitchy acid stompers to 4/4 abrasive bass rollers. 

It's a much welcomed contribution to the series, after Mesh released Jinjé's debut 4 track this year, entitled "Open Unity" which was a reference to Malcolms' love of rave culture and the community aspect it provides - which this mix further seemingly provides homage too.

"This particular mix blends together many of the influences that follow me around in my every day work. Often the biggest inspiration lies in very basic harmonic structures or textures that’s why i combined some of my favourite ambient pieces with a number of, partially binaural, field recordings i took in the black forest last year. I’d love this to be an inspiration and relaxation tool that sparks ideas in good and bad times alike" - Ben Lukas Boysen

Ben Lukas Boysen has made a career out of transforming unusual sounds into compelling music. His first electronic compositions at 18 were experiments with samplers and tape loops leading to an album in 2003 and the subsequent foundation of his own Berlin studio. Since, he has produced multiple albums (many under the alias HECQ), and led numerous workshops on composition and sound aesthetics, as well as creating custom sound design for films, commercials, video games and installations. Boysen’s first film score for „Restive" premiered in 2011, followed by his debut album under his own name in 2013, and the award-winning score for the Sony Playstation game, Everything, in 2016 as well as Amazon series „BEAT“ in 2018 and the score for the  film adaptation of best seller „The Collini Case“ in 2019.

The Artwork of this mix is a print of Hercules Segers, ‘Mountain Valley with a Plateau’ .  In these weird times where we are forced to stay at home and we have to avoid socialising and seeing places, imagination is a big resource. This mix is full of different genres and for me it’s also a trip to see different places.
