Fela Anikulapo-Kuti would be 85 years old today had he not died from complications of AIDS in 1997. By the time of his death, Fela was the inventor of the enduring and influential Afrobeat music style, the composer of an enormous body of music, and one of the bravest political voices in 20th century African music. It is fair to say that no African musician before or since has sacrificed more for the principles he believed in. Nigerian history and music have barreled forth during the two decades since Fela left us. A powerful new generation of Nigerian musicians have emerged in that time, and the music they now champion has been dubbed “Afrobeats,” an appropriation of the name Fela gave his original sound during its heyday. The youngest artists on the scene today have no direct memory of Fela, though his legacy is impossible to escape. In this program, we hear from current day Nigerians from multiple generations and genres—fuji, juju, hip-hop, Afrobeats, and highlife - on how they remember this musical giant, and how they reckon with his complex and challenging legacy.

Romans 11:8-10 Just as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes to see not and ears to hear not, down to this very day.” And David says “Let their table become a snare and a trap, and a stumbling block and a retribution to them. Let their eyes be darkened to see not, and bend their backs forever.”
From the day Jesus arrived on the planet until the day Paul wrote to the Romans, God blinded and deafened national Israel to the truth that Jesus is God in the flesh, sent by Him as their Messiah and Savior. Paul said that God gave them a stupor, in the Greek form it is a word literally communicating according to violent piercing. In English, the word stupor means a suspension or great decrease in sensibility. God put them into a senseless state so that they could not see or hear the truth. Another implication from the word stupor is apathy. Paul added David’s prophetic declaration against Israel to support Jeremiah’s prophecy (Jer. 5:21).
As we live to love with Jesus, we can also expect that there will be people placed in our paths whose attitudes toward Jesus and thus the gospel and our witness range from apathetic to being violently senseless. Nothing you can do or say will change them. We must be careful not to listen to Satan’s accusations that the reason they aren’t believing or seeing God’s love in us is because we are doing something wrong. Since we are human and aren’t perfect, it is highly possible that we are not loving or sharing perfectly. However, that’s not why they can’t see or hear. It’s because God, for purposes only He knows in His wisdom, has put them in such a senseless state. 
When this happens, we should first realize that it could have happened also to us. Second, like Paul’s concern for his senseless brethren, we should be concerned and pray for them. Because salvation is by grace through faith that He gives by the power of the Holy Spirit, He can and may open their eyes and ears at any time—just like He did ours. Today let’s walk with compassion and grace toward everyone God puts in our paths as we live to love with Jesus.

Musician Sasami Ashworth grew up in the US, but this history and her family upbringing echoes in her music. As part of The World's regular collaboration with the podcast "Movement," host Meklit Hadero talks with Ashworth about her acclaimed record “Squeeze,” and how it fits within a larger cycle of creation, restoration and self-discovery.

This piece is a homage to the music of Sauchiehall Street and the RSNO. It is constructed from a number of musical references, which includes the following:

– A Reel melody (a reference to Scottish traditional music)
– A fragment of a song by Gustav Holst (The Thought; a homage to Holst, who used to play in the orchestra)
– A brass fanfare, based on the Hallelujah Chorus (the first piece of music performed by the orchestra)
– A rock drum rhythm and accompanying bass-line (a homage to the amount of rock and metal bands I have seen performing live in Glasgow)
– 1930s dance-band material (a reference to the number of dance halls and cinemas on Sauchiehall Street).
– A hymn tune (a reference to the now-gone churches that are a sadly lost part of Glasgow’s heritage)
– A Buddhist melody (there is a Buddhist centre on Sauchiehall Street, which I have walked past for many years!)
– Orchestration in the style of Copland’s Corral Nocturne (from Rodeo; he conducted the work with the orchestra in 1964)
– The ‘Humming Chorus’ from Madam Butterfly (the first production by Scottish Opera, which the orchestra performed in)
