We Almost Lost Detroit Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson

This song delves into the Brexit debate, featuring soundbites from two individuals who I feel perfectly embody each side of the “Leave” and “Remain” debate, namely the British politician and Eurosceptic Nigel Farage (Leave) and former Prime Minster David Cameron (Remain).  The song is set up as a rap battle between a supporter of the “Remain” side and a supporter of the “Leave” side.  I loved writing this track, particularly because of how timely this issue is in terms of its economic and political relevance.  Each side rigorously puts forth arguments supporting each position, as well as attacking the position of the other side.  For example, the “Remain” rapper references that the UK would lose access to the Single Market and the free flow of capital, goods, services, and people, while the “Leave” rapper references that the EU has morphed into something entirely different from when the UK originally joined in 1973, infringing upon its state sovereignty.

What would it sound like for Disco Terrorist to DJ a wedding?  Well, I had to find out so I played a sunset set at my own wedding!  I wanted to have a very accessible set for our guests who don’t normally listen to electronic music but I still wanted it to be bangin for all my friends who do.  This is my idea of sweet wedding music!  My Bride even dropped a track(Latch!).  Huge Shout out to Drop Theory and The Gaff for making our wedding music off the hook!! LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL

It’s pretty ambitious to consider recording a live album of a band that has only played a dozen shows. Capturing the essence of a live performance has managed to elude many, more seasoned acts. Mat. McHugh & The Seperatista Soundsystem have provided a glaring exception to this rule with their brand new LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL release. 

To be fair Mat. has known and played with the other members of that trio for years. Ian Pritchett (on bass) has produced every album Mat. has been involved with in the last decade and Paul Derricoot (on drums) has been a musical foil since playing on Mat’s 2008 album SEPERATISTA.

The sound of LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL is raw, soulful and real. Influenced by a broad range of genres from Hip Hop to Dub to Punk Rock. The album is a testament to the power of live music and puts forward the importance of the connection between performer and crowd.

Recorded in January 2013 across a run of summer shows in Australia,  the album features songs from Mat. McHugh’s recent LOVE COME SAVE ME LP, songs that span his prolific career as one of Australia’s most respected songwriters, as well as a mash-up of the Clash and Beats International’s Guns of Brixton/ Dub Be Good To Me. 

If this is what the band sounds like after a handful of shows the future is an exciting prospect.

LIVE FROM RANDOM HALL will be available digitally on Die Boredom / Controlled Substance Sound Labs in Australia starting June 4, 2013.

Touring July, August, September 2013, with dates and venues to be announced.
