As we commemorate this year’s historic Shaheedi Gurupurb, the Jaap will bring us closer to the mind and heart of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and his loving conviction about life’s very essence and ultimate purpose, as he witnessed extreme cruetly and faced his own life’s final hours. Written as a letter to his close family and disciples (most notably his mother, wife and young son, Gobind Rai), these lyrical words from Guru Ji’s brutal imprisonment become very real and poignant. In their calm and steady rhythm, they remind us of life’s impermanence and the mind’s vulnerabilities. They steer us to find true peace, by connecting to the one stable reality of Naam, and liberating our human mind from the prison of ego.

Salok Mahalla 9 is the melodious epilogue we listen to, each time an entire recitiation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji is concluded, during the bhog of an Akhand Paath or Sehaj Paath. As such, it anchors us again to the opening message of the Mool Mantar – to hold on to the One Divine unchanging Truth, across the fluctuating sea of existence. May the very same Salok that we hear out of tradition become a tool for our own transformation. In a world plagued and traumatised by conflict, may the Jaap also illuminate pathways to global peace, by honouring Guru Ji’s stand to safeguard human dignity and defend against tyranny to the very end, that earned him sublime honour and jubilation in the heavens.
