I was sadly short on time, but I really wanted to make sure I did something at least to mark this milestone (congrats Marc!). As I was deciding what to do, the bells began to ring in the church at the end of our street - and it felt really celebratory so I drew my inspriation from there. 
The first part of my track is music based on the notes that the bells were playing, using my modular synth, (including Rings into Clouds, for a bit of an in-joke) - which represents me working as normal. The next section was an improvisation on the piano, by my left-handed collaborator, Joey Cain. He lost his right hand in a freak accordion accident when he was small, and so this piece is totally performed using the left hand (thus representing the constraints that the Disquiet Junto sets us up with each week, from which creativity can flourish). The third part was a recording of the bells, made by my friend Joni Acey, who is a field-recording purist. The bells really were recorded today from the window of my studio.

Disquiet Junto Project 500: Humming to Your Selves
The Assignment: Play a tune by yourself and as if by two people whom you invent.

The first part is just an idea I had after noticing my metal water bottle has a nice resonance when hit. In addition to the beat, every sound is from samples of the water bottle.

The electronic part in the middle is the first persona.  This character is neat, fastidious, doesn't like mess.  It's all electronic because it's easier and cleaner sounding than recording acoustic sounds.  It's a cleaner, dryer electronic interpretation of the same water bottle beat and tonality.

The third part is done by a more messy, imperfect persona. Accompanied the original water bottle beat with some guitar.  It's untreated for the most part.  I tried to do things in one take.  I didn't mess with it too much or try to make it perfect.  Didn't move things to be on beat or re-record them.  I left little sounds that I might normally cut out to clean up the mix etc.

Disquiet0500 Humming to Your Selves

Participation in the "Disquiet Junto" project led by Marc Weidenbaum: Humming to Your Selves.

This week’s project is inspired by the work of Fernando Pessoa.
Pessoa wrote from numerous points of view, and for each he developed a unique persona.

Cécile 'Colleen' Schott is in the prime of her life.

The French composer has been releasing records for over 10 years, including the classic The Golden Morning Breaks and Les Ondes Silencieuses. Her recent work, however, has arguably been her best. 2013's The Weighing of the Heart, the first Colleen record to put her vocals centre-stage, was described by FACT's John Twells as "40 minutes of economic, uncluttered and most importantly unique music", while this year's Captain of None is perhaps her most ambitious record to date: an ode to dub-reggae that's more bass and vocal-driven than her previous work.

Colleen's FACT mix is a companion piece of sorts to Captain of None, and focuses on music that "has specifically influenced" the album, "mostly from the point of view of song-writing, interpretation, production, or just a general “feel” in the music, for lack of a better word."

"No other song", Colleen tells us, "encapsulates how these various aspects of music-making are intertwined in Jamaican music better than Burning Spear’s 'Door Peeper'. Released in 1969, the combination of Burning Spear’s voice, percussion, compressed horn line, minimal instrumentation and lyrics, and dry but deep production make this song one of the most earth-shaking I’ve ever heard. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Scientist’s 'Dangerous Match 1' from 1982 sounds like underwater swimming in weird waters and shows how abstract and stylized Jamaican music can be." Elsewhere on the mix, examples of "crazy tape manipulation", "radical production" and "killer basslines" remind us just how much even the more outsider side of today's music owes to dub.

Colleen's FACT mix closes with Lee Perry's 'Return of the Super Ape, a track that she "heard in my childhood. [It was] one of the many Lee Perry/Upsetters songs contained on a tape that my parents bought in the late 70s and which we played in the car on long trips. To this day I just love this track and still find it totally unique and one of a kind: you can never be sure of what it is that you’re hearing on this song: monkeys, spanners falling on the floor in a metal house, a jazz band lost in Jamaica, soap bubbles transformed into notes… before one of the best breaks and song finales of all time."

FACT mix 494 - Colleen (May '15)

A mosaic is an image formed by small fragments of stone, wood, or other material. Each one of those fragments does not have a specific meaning by itself, its role is only revealed when we observe the formed global image. And each fragment of a mosaic usually has only one color.
Mosaic, for piano, toy piano and electronic sounds, uses a similar technique. The piece is composed by a succession of phrases and musical gestures of small dimensions. They gain meaning as the work progresses in time. Each one of these small gestures is almost an independent unit, and its musical material does not need to relate directly to what precedes and follows. It will be their succession in time that will reveal the “musical color” of the piece. This work was commissioned by Viseu Conservatory of Music.

Magic [tape]

A gentle piano-based piece based on the name of my partner, which I've translated into notes of the scale to create a simple theme. I have added some passing notes to the theme so that it flows smoothly, and used it as the introductory figure in the piece. The rest of the piece is based on the right hand figure that accompanies the theme when the RH first comes in.

Uses 'The Grandeur' piano, Arkhis and Premier Upright Bass libraries in Konkakt 6, and a synth patch from Massive.

The Assignment: What does a moment (or a day) in the life of a jellyfish sound like to a jellyfish?

I hate to be lazy and use something I was working on instead of something new sparked by the actual challenge, but sometimes time is our tyrant and I was fascinated by this forgotten masters, some live-in-the-studio improvisations with awesome French drummer André Charlier that I discovered some days ago.
Captured while we were warming up for a recording session years ago. This was on tape but never used nor listened to, and I've been taking some nice bits out of it for further use. These are all ad-lib, abstract and weird soundscapes, no groovy bass 'n drums at all.
This is an abstract, floating groove-less & creepy track.

And I think it fits the challenge perfectly cause, o be honest:

- Invertebrate folks listen to beat-less music, I'm pretty sure. 
- Jelly fish are creepy little  beings.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
