Stede’s mouth drops open just a tiny bit. He blinks rapidly in his scramble for a response. Yeah, Ed figures that there’s no way this guy is heterosexual.

“Relax, I’m messing with you, man. I didn’t get any love notes in my locker. Alright, one or two, but unless you dot your i’s with hearts, you’re in the clear. You seem like more of a quill guy than a glittery gel pen guy.”

(Or: Stede was in the year below Ed at school – and might have, unknowingly, had a tiny bit of a crush on him. Decades later, Ed ends up at the wrong reunion.)

The tiredness hits him like waves crashing onto rocks during a storm. His limbs feel heavy, far too heavy to move, and the nausea is overbearing. He closes his eyes, the light is making the pain in his head worse, it feels as if it's starting to split into two. He can feel himself slowly fading away. A voice plunges through the darkness trying desperately to reach him. “Stede, Stede…” He thinks that’s his name, he’s not sure, it's too hard to think.

After a blow to the head, Stede finds himself living in a place he doesn't remember, with a man he doesn't recognise. Is it possible to fall in love with the same person twice?

This story is inspired by the 1991 film "Regarding Henry" and some personal experience.

Ed shouldered open the door to Jackie’z. Did his habitual, instinctive scan of the room—searching for potential threats.
And immediately found one.

Ed froze. Lips parted. A roaring in his ears, like the ocean. Purple spots crowded his vision and his mouth flooded with saliva and for one brief, terrifying moment he thought he might do something super embarrassing, like throw up or faint or throw up and then faint.

Because standing there at the host’s podium was the actual last man on earth that Ed had expected to run into tonight.

Diverges from canon somewhere during Impossible Birds. The Revenge makes port, and Ed goes looking for a drink at Jackie'z. He's a bit surprised to find out who's currently serving on her waitstaff.
