Ultra High – Are You Ready For Love – Stormy Weather Mix (MCA Records 1996 a Hi-Lux Production)

Are You Ready For Love was the Hi-Lux Produced follow up for side project Ultra High - ‘Stay With Me’. The Ultra High project was created to explore the extent of a commercial side, but subsequently the commercial success of the project then allowed for the creative exploration and freedom to go totally of the rails. I am not including the main commercial club & radio original mixes of this track, but have instead opted to upload this monster of a mix – The Hi-Lux ‘Stormy Weather Mix’

Interesting fact….. Inspiration for the mix came from a very wild and stormy night as a youth growing up in Suffolk. On this particularly wild and stormy late winter night, I’d been reading late night scare stories about haunted places in the UK.. I’d read that the most haunted place in the UK was fairly close by at Borley Rectory…. with multiple sightings of all types of ghosts, and one particular story I’d read of a headless nun screaming through the surrounding country lanes driving a horse drawn carriage at full speed brought out my curious side. So, along with a then housemate, we drove out to try and find this tiny deep Suffolk countryside Borley Rectory at what must have been 2 or 3 in the morning on a night so wild that nobody with any sense was away from their beds let alone outdoors.

Getting there through dark & disserted country lanes proved to be an eerie and tension building challenge, but eventually after being lost for another couple of hours going in circles arrived at Borley Church and sat in the car for a while wondering whether we should actually even get get out of the car as the intense howling driving wind could very easily have removed us from our footings. The church pathway to the old church door was lined with tall skinny trees swaying around in the black of night and wind like banshees, tree debris and leaves flying everywhere, the sound of the wind overpoweringly intense…. This was indeed, a very stormy and godless night !

Braving the comfort of the car, we crept slowly up the pitch black  church pathway holding our jackets tightly up around our necks and up to our noses for protection from the swirling debris to see if the church door was open, barely managing to stay on our feet.

I won’t tell you what happened next and what we saw, but needless to say a lesser man could have had their hair turned white on the spot. 

That night, and that wind, and that storm haunts me til this day.

There’s no reason thinking back why anyone would want to hear, let alone dance to such a haunted and inspired mix… but nonetheless, it was done and was a way of exercising the demons of that night… the track contains wind and church bell samples in an epic and cinematic mix which takes me clearly back to that night whenever I dare listen to it.

MCA realised this mix was something special, even though of no commercial use and sent out a very limited exclusive un-named white label of it as you see in the picture… no band or track name… just ‘Stormy Weather Mix’.
