Inspired by an episode of Rumble Strip podcast called "Finn and the Bell." The song explores the iimitless spirit of kindness generated by a survivor and a community in the aftermath of an unspeakable loss.

The Bell

This song is inspired by the life of Oklahoma's Fern Holland, a small town girl who internationally advocated for women's rights and created shelters for Iraqi women following the Iraq war. She was killed by the Taliban at a checkpoint in 2003 at the age of 33.

Rose

The protagonist travels from her home in Nashville to her childhood hometown of Birmingham where she confronts the impact of racial violence in her life. Inspired in part by the writings of Margaret Renkl.

My Birmingham Home

5000 black migrant farm workers died when the banks of Lake Okeechobee breached in Florida in the Great Storm of 1928. Few whites died. In 2005, 77 years later, when Katrina rolled into New Orleans and the levees of Lake Pontchartrain breached, it all happened again. Systemic racism, climate change and the role of folk music in building resilience in an oppressed culture all intersect.
